I need to replace my MSD distributor anyone have a recommendation

I would like to have one that doesn’t require a separate ignition box

Pertronix. They do have a series that uses a box, but the Flamethrower series does not.

Ordinarily, I agree with Mark D (above), but in this case I will refer to my experience with Flamethrower...I have run this type of distributor in my last two engine builds and have had no issues with either. The first (in a Mustang with a 408C engine), I had lots of ignition issues (failures, really) until I replaced the distributor with a Pertronix unit. With FFR 8317 (my current build), I went directly to the Pertronix unit and have no issues. Of course, be sure that the distributor gear is compatible with your cam gear, no matter what you choose!

I understand they are very picky about how they are grounded. On the other hand, I have experienced a few MSD and Ford TFI failures... so what is suggested?

Take a look at DUI products. More money, but I've had great luck with them and never seen anything negative posted about them.

I had a Mallory distr. in my coupe ... ended up failing when the pin holding the cam gear/to distr. sheared. Replaced it with a stand-alone MSD and had no more problems. 422" Windsor motor.
