    GT40P head bolt washers?

    Mornin' Gang,

After 650 miles of driving on my junkyard motor (47k on it), I had to pull the heads. I found a failure in a head gasket causing combustion gasses to enter the cooling system. When that happens, it's a barrel of laughs.

My engine is out of a 2000 Mountaineer. All I have done to it is converted it to carb, b cam, and valve springs to accommodate the lift. This engine has the GT40p heads on it.

I already purchased my gaskets and new head bolts. They are not ARP, just factory replacement. I noticed that there are no washers with the head bolts, and I don't recall any coming off when I removed the heads (which are now at the machine shop).

Is this normal to not have any washers on these head bolts from the factory?

Yes. No washers, but the bolts are flange bolts (built in washer). If your bolts are not flange style you have the wrong ones.

I have the same motor in my current build. I too went carb, but using the e cam. Not running yet, hopefully soon.

Ah yes. This makes sense. I have seen some conflicting torque specs. Did you do yours to 70 or 80?

The flange bolts are torque to yield. Non flange are traditional torque.
    The torque procedure is;

For all Torque-To-Yield hex head bolts, tighten in three (3) steps as follows:

    1) Tighten all bolts in sequence (Figure 2) to 25-35 ft.lbs (34-47 Nm).

    2) Tighten all bolts in sequence (Figure 2) to 45-55 ft.lbs (61-75 Nm).

    3) Tighten all bolts in sequence (Figure 2) an additional 1/4 turn (85-95 degrees).

When the cylinder head bolts have been tightened following these
procedures, it is not necessary to retighten the bolts after extended
operation. TTY bolts must be replaced with new bolts. Do not reuse TTY
bolts. TTY bolts may only be used one time.

Interesting there is no torque value. Just turn a 1/4

The 1/4 turn get them TIGHT! Have a breaker bar handy. The bolt actually stretches a bit as you go that 1/4 turn, that's the "yield" part. The stretch is why you can only use them once.

Makes sense. It’s crazy the amount of debate online with the mustang guys about these bolts being TTY or not. Thanks for the info!

What springs did you use for B cam? I am helping a buddy with installing GT40 heads with a B cam on a '79 Mustang.

Hi joe. I did a good bit of digging on that. Alexsparts.com. I went with the .550 lift springs and new seals. You will have to shim as well. Call Alex and he will give you everything you need. Great prices too
