    Oil for Coyote

    Just want to confirm the quantity of oil needed to fill (dry) a coyote with Moroso Pan ?

    Also appreciate some recommendations on oil type and grade.

    Factory is 8 qts. The moroso Cobra pan holds 1.5 more than that. So, 9.5 qts + oil filter. So a bout 10-10.5 qts total.

    Factory recommends 5W-20 oil. If the engine is stock and you're not racing it, that will work just fine. If you drive it when it's cold, a 0W-20 would be even better. People who race or drive them hard use 5W-30, or even a 5W-40.

    There are two advantages to synthetic oil. 1. Higher heat management. The oil is heated primarily by RPM's. And I mean extended high rpms that you would encounter in road racing. The occasional romp to 6,500 doesn't heat the oil enough to matter.

    2. Extended drain intervals. No matter what kind of oil you use, it should be changed every spring. If you drive your Cobra more than 8-10K miles a year, then it might be worth it to use a synthetic oil so you only have to change it once a year. If you change it more often than that, you're just pouring money into the recycle bin. And with 10qts in the pan, you should easily get 5-6K miles out of the cheapest Wally World oil.

    There are currently only 5 synthetic oils on the market, and Mobile 1 is not one of them.

    Bob I agree with you reasoning behind oil change intervals and extended milage. I think changing oil in the fall makes a bit more sense? I change mine at the end of the summer driving season, so that it overwinters with clean contamination free oil. That way no combustion contamination inside the block over the winter months and, I can just jump in when I get that first unexpected nice spring day and go.

    Been reading a lot that the Moroso pan is 8 quarts. Any conformation on 9.5 quarts? I do a once a year change, about 3,000 miles & have been filling with 8 quarts. No problem with adding more just want to be sure I am not overfilling it.

    My Gen 2 coyote w/Moroso pan took 8 quarts during first oil change at 500 miles. Mobil 1, 5w-20. Scott's took 8.5, so 8-8.5 quarts is about right depending on how 'dry' and empty you get the motor.

    10-10.5 seems high based on what I saw. Technically I found the coyote with stock pan listed at 7.7 quarts. With the Moroso I found slightly less than 9 had my dipstick indicating correctly.

    If you are use the stock location for the dipstick and the stock dipstick, use that as your guide to how much oil to fill the engine.

    It depends on how you drive it. The oil will get more abuse during the winter months, and become more acidic. If you don't drive it at all in the winter, it makes more sense to change it in the fill, and let clean oil sit in the engine over the winter. But if you drive at all during the winter months, then it's better to change it in the spring.

    The weather is nice enough here that we don't have an off season, just a shortened season. I drive all my toys all year long. Even the race car gets some track time during the winter.

    I've been changing the oil on my 2012 MkIV/Coyote at the end of the season before the car is put away for the winter. It take 8.5 litres to get the oil level in the mid range of the dip stick.

    Lets remember, if you're running a stock Coyote, you are running a stock production engine out of a Mustang GT. They are great engines but they are stock engines. So, if you put a couple thousand miles on your Cobra every summer and dare to throttle past 6 thousand revs a few times....follow the Ford recommendations for oil type and grade (5W-20). Anything more than this is $$ spent for show-N-shine bluster.

    How about a new bit? This judgmental routine got old a long time ago and isn't helpful. Everybody uses their builds in the way they enjoy them (that's the point, isn't it?) and it just might be different than yours. There's no right or wrong here.

    Aside from that, I disagree with your recommendation. At 2,000 miles per year, per your example, and the Ford recommended 10K oil change interval for this engine, that would be 5 years. If that's what you meant. I wouldn't leave oil in my old lawn mower for 5 years. I change mine once a year, and as others have suggested, right before going into hibernation for the winter since I live in a cold climate and it doesn't get driven for 4-5 months at least. That won't be 10K miles, and without the DD Oil-Life Monitor, don't have any data to say it's needed yet. But it's cheap insurance. I use the base Gen 2 Coyote Ford recommended 5W-20 full synthetic. Takes right at 9 quarts.

    Just to throw something else in the mix, my Coyote's recommended oil is 5W-50. Same as a 2013/14 Shelby GT500.
    20th Anniversary Mk IV, A50XS Coyote, TKO 600, Trunk Drop Box, Trunk Battery Box, Cubby Hole, Seat Heaters, Radiator hanger and shroud.

    On the A50EX ford recommends 5W-50 and that is what i am using. This engine has a three gallon pan so i used the oil cooler off block as a oil heater- cooler to have oil in operating temp range.

    Lots of individual comments here and people saying the same thing. I think I hear the general consensus is:

    1. Use the recommended viscosity for your particular engine BASED ON your driving habits and climate
    2. Check your dipstick, don't over or under-fill
    3. Everyone drives differently and lots of different engines... so there is not a single answer for this thread

    Does that sum it up? LOL...

    Clarifying Question: I am also running the Moroso Pan, does Ford's OE dipstick read accurately for fill? I am running a Coyote (BOSS 302 variant) but I believe both have the same OEM pan.

    Stick should measure the fill despite oil pan depth. The dipstick maintains the same position below the block skirt regardless of what capacity the pan is. Its full when it hits the mark.

    Some early MORSO COYOTE pans had a bad baffle that did not have the dip stick slot cut into it so the stick would bend over on top of the baffle causing a false reading which could lead to an over fill.

    They fixed the problem on the next production run & sent out replacement baffles to anyone who requested them free of charge.

    I had a bad one from late December 2013.

    I take about 8.6 quarts with a Mobil 1 Corvette filter. I say about because I am poring from two 5 quart containers.

    I have a later Moroso oil pan and a Gen-2 Coyote and found that the relief that apparently works for the Gen-1 engine is in the wrong place for Gen-2. There are threads showing how to check whether yours clears and where and how to drill the correct hole if needed.

    Paul/Bear - I understand the depth will read accurately IF the dipstick fits properly, so my dipstick question was whether or not the baffling in the pan would be compatible/in the way. Sorry if that was unclear, it wasn't worded well. Thanks.

    There are threads on how to check if the slot is good to go. Based on post #16 there might be an issue with Gen 2 engines. Since your engine is in the car you can do a quick & dirty instead of opening the pan up. Drain all the oil & filter. Refill with exactly 8 quarts of oil & start the engine. once if has full pressure for a minute or so shut in down. \

    Give some time for the oil to drain down then clean the dip stick & take a measurement. If the stick is in the right place you should get a clean break line just above the lower hole in the stick. 8 Quarts & a bit will take it up to the upper hole if all is well in your test.

    The Coyote comes with a factory installed windage tray. Although, you don't want to overfill to the point where rotating assembly is immersed in oil. As Kevin has stated, in post #14 and #18, if the dip stick is threaded properly in the Moroso oil pan, the markings on the dip stick will keep oil level the safe distance from the bottom end rotating assembly. As stated before, use the Ford recommended oil type and grade. Ford recommends not to exceed 10,000 miles or one year between change intervals unless you're making big HP or going all out racing.

    This is a filter that fits Corvettes & Cadillac V's. Its a straight screw on for the COYOTE. It is short enough so I can change it by hand with no chassis interference.

    Using that Mobil 1 oil filter for the Coyote has been mentioned by several builders. I'm using it on mine. Physically, it's exactly the same size as Ford is supplying as OE on the Gen 2 Coyote with the oil cooler. It's a highly rated filter and after some discussion with another forum member regarding technical specs, seems it's a good match for these engines. Here's what it looks like compared to the filter that came on my Coyote out of the crate:
