    fuel pump

can I use the 1991 mustang in tank fuel pump with a regulator to feed a carb motor?

    Yes.

You need to run a bypass type regulator and return the excess fuel to the tank or you will kill the pump in short order.

A non bypass regulator would "deadhead" the pump (and kill it).

So it should work fine with a bypass regulator?

    I did - no problems.

Some people don't like it due to pressure drop concerns - but I haven't had any trouble with it.

I used a bulkhead fitting to plumb the return back into the tank - wasn't sure if the 5/16" return line in the tank fitting would handle full flow.

If you do that you need to plumb the inside of the tank to get the return back into the baffled area - otherwise you're always trying to empty the baffle (not helpful).

I an still uncertain if the existing 5/16" return would handle full flow and allow the regulator to keep the pressure down to carb levels (but it does put the return into the baffle).

I inow this isn't what you asked... but...
I swapped out the mustang EFT pump for this in-tank low pressure $25 pump.

It was trivial to mount in the mustang hanger. It makes 6 psi dead-headed at my carb. I kept my return line installed, and just plugged it. So far, no issues, but I'm only at 1800 miles. No issues with vapor lock either, I think mostly due to it being an in-tank pushing system. That, and the 1/2 plastic carb spacer I have.

I had thought about going with the high pressure EFI pump that came with my tank, but since all low-pressure regulators that could handle the higher volume created by the stock EFI pump were not cheap (at least not the ones I found), I opted to just go with this low pressure pump instead.

I'm pretty certain I'm using this one: Mallory 29387

I'm pretty certain I paid considerably less for it than what seems to be the going price currently.
