Black exhaust pipes

I really like the "all-business" look of some of the original CSX cars that have the black exhaust. Has anyone here done it? If so, how is it achieved? I'm thinking it might be as simple as high-temp flat black rattle can paint.

You can have them ceramic coated black. It will last longer than paint but cost more also.

High temp black paint. Fairly simple.

I'm with you .. I love the look of the black pipes too.

High Temp Rattle Can Header Paint. After a few hundred miles to "cook" the paint. I took a light scotch-bright pad to them, and gently "buffed" them. Yeah.. I know... Buffed with a scotch bright? But, took the "sheen" off a bit more, and cleaned up the look of the pipes. I'm quite pleased with how they came out. Even better.. I had a few scratches from road debris and what not. Trivial to touch up. Put some paper behind the pipes, and lay down a new coat. Then, once more with the scotch bright.

I have tried "high temp powder coating" and BBQ paint. The powder coating didn't stay, it blistered and started to peel. I've heard there is other powder coatings that are good for higher temps but the guy here in San Diego doesn't have those. So I used Rust-oleum Ultra BBQ paint which has a semi-gloss finish. I have about 6,000 miles on the car and they look as good as the day I painted them. It was an easy job and cost effective.

I’ve got rattle can matte black bbq paint, looks good, few spots it didn’t stick well to the welds and I have some light rust where it chipped. I plant to just clean and paint over with the on the car, well masked.

De-burr, break sharp edges with a file, sand and de-grease the pipes before painting and it will look great and last quite a while.

Matte black ceramic coating. My pipes are from Gas-N and came only in polished stainless. The coater had to use aluminum oxide media to blast them before applying the ceramic.

I do the same thing as skidd does, it works. Tried it one day for the heck of it and was quite surprised.

I went with something different. Cerakote matte black. Cheaper than ceramic and will hold up under 1500 degrees I’m told.
Both pipes done for $250.00. Best quote for ceramic in So. Cal I could find was $750.

I originally went with black high tempt BBQ paint and it held up well for a couple of months street driving but the heat from a few 20 minute track sessions caused it to crumble off of the 4 pipes ahead of the mufflers. Afterwards I had them done in matte black ceramic (about $250 as I recall, but that was almost 10 years ago).

I know this is an old post, but I've been debating side pipe options (and as always, color).

That green is AWESOME looking. What color is that? Green w/ no stripes is high on the list.

I paid $100 per pipe to ceramic coat them. It’s spectacular. I rattle canned a motorcycle exhaust and it browned over time. It’s worth it IMO to have it coated.

HA! i assumed as much, but I'll show my lack of knowledge - if I go to a bodyshop and say British Racing Green, is there a set paint code? Mica? Love the color for it's classic looks, but would like some metallic flake in there. I didn't know if the original BRG was a metallic color or not....

OEM 1965 color for a Mustang - Ivy Green. This version is a base/clear using PPG Envirobase, which is a waterbased paint.

Sidepipes are stainless that was etched and then ceramic coated satin black.

Also, the PPG number for the Ivy Green mix is 43408.
