    Drilling Spindles

Hey all. On page 81 of the assembly manual it shows them drilling out the tapered holes on the spindles with a 5/8” drill bit. Haven’t seen anyone mention it in the build threads. Which bolts go through these holes? Looking ahead in the manual and it’s hard to tell which bolts run through these?

I don't recall drilling the spindles.
Have you seen this video from Factory-5?

Sorry GDG. I should have been more clear in my original post. Question is related to the rear IRS spindles.

It's not a mistake. It's for the UCA connection at the top of this picture. There's a bolt plus a tapered sleeve that fits into the hole. I'd suggest going through the IRS instructions and gathering all the parts and identify where they go. It's pretty straightforward.

I'm a 3-Link guy, so you had me scratching my last night when I looked up page 81 at my manuals.

For the record, you will be in Expert Hands whenever you get an answer from EdwardB.

Thanks for the picture Paul. Exactly what I was looking for. Laid out everything last night, but the B&W book is sometimes hard to read when it comes to part numbers, etc....Or maybe its just my eyes.

If you haven’t drilled those holes out to 5/8” yet, be careful! It’s very easy for the drill bit to start going off center. I had that problem on one of my spindles. Fortunately a local machine shop was able to use a drill press to come in from the back and true it up, rescuing the spindle. IMO it’s worth a few bucks to have those holes opened up by a machinist from the start. The relatively soft aluminum of the spindle and significant size change of the hole size can result in a lot of wander.

I’m with ya on that. I haven’t installed my spindles yet but was just slightly off with the IRS ears widening. Didn’t cause any insurmountable issues but I know what you are saying with the bit wander.

Thanks for that! I already installed mine and it certainly would have been useful. Hopefully it will help someone in the future!

This isn't a difficult operation, but heed the warnings I stated. You'll need a drill motor with some "snoose"... go easy and it'll drill out just fine.

(IMO it was scarier to cut the "ears" off... "Did I measure that right??? These are expensive..."

Definitely measured twice on the ears. I had a hard time keeping a hold of them with my work bench/vise, but all went smoothly. As soon as I get my backordered stuff, I'll be able to mount them...then I guess we'll see if I was straight!
