    The Milano Project

Well it’s finally happened. Last Saturday I picked up the new project from the previous owner Chuck, where he was storing the kit. It’s been partially started, but not too far and I intend to take things apart and do my own changes and validate other parts of the build. We even got a surprise when some of our Gateway Cobra Club members, out for a drive, stopped by. The car is now home and the preliminary inventory is complete.

One of the biggest decisions with many of us for these builds is colors. I’m lucky I guess that I’ve been obsessed with it for a couple of years and I’ve already got the colors picked. As most of you know I’m a big Marvel fan. Once I saw the Guardians Of the Galaxy, my color scheme was set. The main character, Peter Quill, has a Blue and Orange spaceship called the Milano and thus the name of my build.

    Milano2.jpg

I’ve always loved Blue and Orange and now I can have them together. Also my father worked in the space industry for most of his life and even worked on the Mercury and Gemini capsules to send our first Americans into space. This one will be for him too. He always loved fast cars.

Here’s the idea for the build
    • MK4 with Dual Rollbars
    • Vortech V3 Supercharger with Treadstone intercooler
    • Dart SHP Block w/ Forged 347 Big Bore Rotating assembly
    • AFR 195 Competition Heads
    • Custom ground cam (Comp)
    • Holley Dual Sync Cam Plug
    • Holley HP Plus EFI System with 1000 cfm Throttle Body
    • Holley Coil packs
    • Edlebrock EFI RPM Intake
    • TKO-600RR Transmission
    • Custom Center Console Dash
    • MGW Shifter and new Shift ball
    • IRS with 3.27:1 Rear Diff
    • FR500 Deep Dish Chrome Rims
    • Chrome Quickjacks
    • Two tone grey leather interior and carpet
    • Re-covered leather Kirkey lowback classic race seats
    • Hidden Radio sound system

Here is the new, to me, kit at the previous owner's temporary storage location.

Here’ s a pic of the car at home in the garage next to #4402, ready for the fun to commence.

    20181007_204737.jpg

First thing is to dis-assemble the rear end and have new gears installed. While that is happening I'll get some of the other odds and ends cleaned up to a uniform starting point and go from there. I've been planning this for years, so really going to enjoy the build process and shamelessly copy some of the great features others on this forum have done as well. We have a great group of people in the Gateway Cobra Club, so any help I need, I'll be drawing from them.

So just a quick update on the project. After I got the car home and did the inventory, I started critically going over the car and figuring out what all I had to correct to get it to a good starting point. Luckily we have an active club here in St. Louis and many members have pointed out small things that even I missed. It started with the front upper ball joints being assembled upside down, so they were pointing in the wrong direction and ended at the back bumper, so basically everything is coming off and getting reworked. I've rebuilt the front upper control arms and installed Energy Suspension boots since these were either missing or torn somehow. I'll rent a larger torque wrench tomorrow and get the final toques on this setup.
    20181014_114936.jpg20181020_165635.jpg

I've also pulled the half shafts out and hopefully I'll have the rear pumpkin out soon for a re-gear to a 3.27:1. New upgraded 600HP half shafts have been ordered from the from the DriveShaftShop and should be here in 3-4 weeks. I hope to have the rear diff back in place by then. New FFMetal F-Panels and Firewall has been ordered as well to replace these components. I've also pulled off the DS and PS footboxes. 2BKing was nice enough to send me his drawings for his footbox layout. I also got a PS layout from one of our members MPTech. I'm going to hopefully fab these up from poster board, but not actually transfer them to aluminum until I get my new foam test block and headers. That will be the deciding factor in much of this.
    20181020_165719.jpg

I did cut out the standard E-Brake bracket. I hope to contour mine more into the top of the trans tunnel, similar to this pic.

Really like your color choice and excited to follow the turbo design/installation for your build. A twin turbo 331 is going to be a handful...

What are you running in #4402?

Chris, 4402 is a supercharged 308 putting down 425 rwhp. I've had her for awhile and just got used to the boost and power. I've had this project in my head for years and just had an opportunity to pull the trigger. Couldn't be happier. One day 4402 will go out to a new owner. She's for sale on this site and others. Thanks for the reply.

Its been a while since my last update and a lot of things have been happening. Some good, some not and a few changes, but I guess that goes with all these projects. My rear end has had the new 3:27 gears installed and the new upgraded half shafts.
    20181229_145302.jpg

I've also got all the trunk aluminum drilled and set up to be powder coated. The FFMetal battery box is also ready for final installation. I still need to cut out the openings in the cockpit rear bulkhead for the speakers going there.
    20181213_194104.jpg

All aluminum that faces the road will be black, the items in the engine bay will be a darker grey. I also purchased a foam block so I could get a good fitment on the headers and routing of wiring while the engine is being built. I've moved on to the font aluminum now. I've located and drilled the new F panels and I'm currently fitting the inside driver footbox and all of the passenger footbox. I'm also moving the firewall about 2 inches forward.
    20181122_123413.jpg

For my birthday, my youngest daughter surprised me with a real cool present. A crocheted cobra. She didn't have a template or anything. She just saw it in her head and made it. She said it was to help keep me focused the car project. I think it's pretty cool.
    20181214_164445.jpg

Now to the hard part. I went and talked to my tuner, Bob Monks, about my parts combinations. I wanted to make sure I was getting all the right components that we would need for a successful project. I told him my goals or Road course and autocross as well as just driving down the road on cruises. He said he could definitely do it either way but he showed me empirical data from multiple different similar engines and where the power came in. In one the HP jumped 125 HP in 500 RPM. That wouldn't work for me accelerating out of a curve. I want a more linear power band. Because of that I'm going back to another supercharger. Yes I know I could get it to work, but I've talked to multiple people and read multiple accounts about SC vs turbo on the street in manual shifted cars. I'm ok with it now and I'll still be in the power band I wanted.

I picked Vortech 4FA218-140SQ model for the SC. I've also bought a Holley EFI Dual sync distributor that I can later convert to a cam plug and use coil near plug on the ignition.
I also went with this as my ECU and throttle body. https://www.holley.com/products/fuel.../parts/550-501
I'll be able to capture data from driving sessions and tweek the tables myself using my laptop. I plan on a Edelbrock Victor Jr EFI intake to round out the top end of the engine. Hopefully I start making good progress on the front end and then on to the brakes.

Well its been awhile since my last update. I ended up taking a new lead position with my company, which meant more time at work. That and when I got home I'm brain dead. Anyway I haven't got the time on the project I was originally planning. Everyone has their challenges though and I'm still going to finish this as fast as I can while still being true to the dream. I really miss my old ride though. Anyway on to the updates.

    20190828_185955.jpg
I finished the back end up. I made new interior panels so that when I get the rest of the wiring done, I can close up the sides nice and clean and have smooth sides to attach the carpeting.

    20190828_190012.jpg
I added speakers to the back bulkhead. I have a Bluetooth enabled amp that will rest between the speakers in the trunk and I'll provide tunes through my phone. The idea is to embed speakers in the area below the door for a total of 4 speakers pumping out tunes. I had a discussion with another club member, MPTech, about the cockpit area. I had planned on putting al elbow rest in. He suggested that since I have IRS and the center pumpkin doesn't move, that I could make a cubby hole in the area in front of the pumpkin. That is the dark area just below speakers. This should give me a little more storage in that area that is about 9 inches deep.

    20190704_191648.jpg
I travelled to West Chicago to pick up my new mill from FordStrokers. It is a Dart Block 347 Big Bore with AFR 195 competition heads, custom ground cam, Edelbrock EFI intake, Dual sync Holley Distributor that I'm going to convert a cam plug, Holley HP+ EFI engine management system with a 1000 cfm throttle body and Vortech 4FA218-140SQ model for the SC. I put on a Champion gated road race oil pan from Levy Racing.

    20190809_095318.jpg
This is the first fit into the engine bay. I made custom interior panels for the engine bay. I'll be able hide all the wires behind these to help clean up the engine area as well.

    20190812_052941.jpg
I had to notch around the SC to embed it into the side panel as well. The discharge is toward the bottom and the piping will run low and forward to the Treadstone intercooler.

    Attachment 113116
My kit didn't come with headers and I ended up buying a set of FFR's new polished stainless headers. They're really nice and the adjustability seems like it should just be so easy.

    20190824_125815.jpg
This is everything cut in and the headers installed. I have a little clean up to do and then I'll be starting to mock up the cockpit area. After that I should start finishing up some other stuff prior pushing on to running the fuel lines. Plans are to run 3/8 hardline for feed and return along with short runs of braided stainless.

So it's been a while since I posted on my build thread. Life and family come first and I've had a lot of that. That being said, I purchased the new headers for my build and they fit well with the DS and PS footbox modifications I have done.
    20190824_121350.jpg

I installed 2 4" speakers in the middle of the cockpit, along with a 9" deep cavity leading back to the differential. Since this is an IRS build the diff is locked in place and the cavity runs above the drive shaft. I plan on building a hinged elbow rest that I can store stuff in for trips.

    20190828_190012.jpg

I placed smaller 3" speakers in the kick panel that will cross the cockpit. I also built a back side cover for the sound to push against for better sound.
    20191127_064838.jpg20191127_064851.jpg

I had to make custom end pieces to go to the body and radiator to direct the air. I fabricated some custom brackets and my neighbor welded them in place. This is to allow the intercooler to be bolted in place.
    20191127_065742.jpg 20191127_120345.jpg

And this is with the intercooler placed in the incoming air stream.

I cut the supercharger in to the engine compartment side panel and trimmed it with a thin rubber gasket. I also ran my heater lines using a -10AN fittings to the block and the water pump.
    20191127_131204.jpg

I fabbed up the intercooler tubing and included the blow off valve and wastegate. I'm going to try and control the boost sequentially as I progress through the gears with max boost in 3rd and 4th gears.
    20191205_070048.jpg

Here's a shot of the system together and the IC tubes and BOV and WG welded in place. You may also notice that I have a dual sync distributor that I've converted to a cam/crank sensor. I'm running a Holley HP ECU system with 8 individual coil near plug, so there will be no plug wires running from the front of the engine.
    20191205_070103.jpg

I built a custom bracket to hold my coils and used soft copper tubing cut and sanded down to specific dimensions to properly space the coils out.
    20200224_204518.jpg

I have a 2" firewall forward and I mounted the bracket right under that to get them out of the way. The wire harness will come down the middle and branch to the coils and out to the engine components.

I routed the heater tubes up to the heater module
    20191127_120311.jpg

And cut in my 3 reservoirs for front, rear and clutch. I also listened to multiple members of our local Gateway Cobra Club and cut an access panel
    20191127_121037.jpg

To top is off I picked my orange color. 2020 Twister Orange. I orders the special caliper paint mixed for this color. The pic shows the color to be yellowish but that is more on me than the color itself. It is orange.

Once again things are SLOWLY progressing. Life, as everyone on this forum says, gets in the way. I've mocked up my front dash. My old car had something similar. I found that with this layout, the dash area can go almost straight down in front off the driver and passenger, thus making more leg room and slightly more spacious cockpit.

    20201030_160713.jpg

The final piece will be a piece of white oak inset into a metal frame and stained grey. I've done the initial body gaps on the body to get them close for the painter and made all my body cuts. I measured that hood probably 5 times before I cut it the first time. Once the first cut is done the rest are a lot easier mentally. I finished the light buckets as well. Before I sent the body to the painter, I did this to give my I did this to give myself and him an idea of how I want my stripes.

    20210130_192057.jpg

I'm lucky in that my painter is a friend of mine and only lives a couple of miles from me. Once he was done with the frame, I brought the chassis home and removed all of the engine compartment aluminum and sent it out for powder coating. I had picked my leather and carpet

    20210312_183936.jpg

and I wanted the powder coat to match the leather.

    20210412_083223.jpg

    20210427_171328.jpg

I like how it's turning out. I'll be mounting the leather on the rear bulkhead as soon as I have the leather pieces sewn. In the end, my Kirkey classic seats will be recovered in the same leather.

It's ready for paint. Hope to have the blue shot this weekend, then the stripes the next weekend. Since my friend is doing this on the side we have to schedule to use the paint booth on the weekends. He done an amazing job on the car and I couldn't be happier. I was shocked and what the material costs were for painting this project. He said the material cost has definitely gone up during covid, but not near as much as lumber. While I'm waiting on the paint to be shot, I'm finishing up some stuff around the cars. Drilling the roll bars, gluing the rear bulkhead cover, etc. Once the body is back, I'll get final measurements for the dash work and weld in the new dash supports. Once all the welding is done, I'll install the new carpet. I've already cut most of it and trial fit it. Its a nice stone grey 100% wilton wool. I can't wait for final assembly.

Well the posts have been few and far between. I could go on about all the interruptions, but as we all know Life intrudes all the time. I have the chassis prepped and ready for body install. I just have a little to do around the custom dash
    20210618_151823.jpg

I'm scheduled for the final tune on Monday with Bob Monks. He's been great so far. Really looking forward to the final numbers. The system has a built in wastegate and blow off and the HP system allows me to regulate the boost by speed.

I also got the car painted with it's final scheme.
    20210619_094314.jpg

Once the final tune is done I'll be finishing up the dash and then starting the final assembly. Hoping to have everything together in 2 weeks.

Thanks. Not a turbo though, but a supercharger. Originally I was going to do a twin turbo, but the tuner talked me out of it. He showed me multiple engines about my size when the turbo kicks in the HP jumping between 120 and 150HP. I didn't want that happening on the exit of a curve. The Vortech supercharger is more linear. I don't plan on doing but maybe 3 trips down the strip. I built the car for fun on the street, road course and and autocross, so the supercharger fit the bill nicely. Thanks for the kind words though. It seems to me to have taken forever.

So since the last update I help my daughter finish the re-hab on her house and move her in and helped in the preparation of my other daughter's Vow renewal. Basically, she got married last year in very private ceremony due to Covid, but we wanted her to have her day, so we just moved the party out a year. On the car I finally finished the dash layout.
    20211113_133813.jpg
There are seat heaters, dual USB ports, heater controls, Headlights, driving lights, and cockpit courtesy lights. Along with the usual GPS Speedometer and other gauges. The plan is to stain this a darker grey and poly coat the whole thing along with the trans cover and center console. I even built a solid box back behind the bulkhead the center console opens up to. Since the car is IRS and the center section doesn't move, I used this space. The idea came from my club's member, MPTech on the two forums. I thought it was a great idea and ran with it. A friend of mine owns his own saw mill and provided me the white oak I used in the construction. The new Center dash section will be held in place by an aluminum trim ring that will go up both sides and across the top to sandwich the center flange in place. Behind this I have a 29 pin bulkhead connector so that I can disconnect the dash and completely remove it from the car.

I also finally got the car tuned after a couple of short dyno days with the tuner found little things. I swear i went over that car looking for anything, but after all the cars he's tuned he knew more places to look. It all worked out in the end. During the top end of the run he found a small dip in the fuel delivery. He pointed out an area where a constriction could happen, so I'll clean that up and take it in for a quick update next spring or summer. Currently I'm running 18 degrees of total timing. I've included the dyno chart. Its a pretty even ramp and we were gaining about 50 + HP with each 2 degrees we added to the base 10 degrees. I ended up at 576 RWHP for now. I'll get that other tune later and easily hit my planned marks next year. As it is, I hope to get the car inspected before the end of the year. The tuner is Bob Monks and he along with his staff were a pleasure to work with.

Do you still have the steering outer tie rods mounted from the top with the nut on the bottom?

As another forum member pointed out, your tie rods are showing mounted from the top in post #7 and this picture: https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/atta...8&d=1540087465. They are supposed to be mounted from the bottom with the nut on top. This would also mean the steering arms are incorrectly installed because the correct taper wouldn't allow them to be mounted from the top. If in doubt, check the manual. It's explained and pictured. Don't see any response that this was acknowledged or corrected. Left this way your front end geometry will not be correct and could result in an undesirable setup including bump steer. Maybe you've already corrected. I hope so.

Your paint looks great BTW. Very nice build overall. Congrats.
