    Pomp and Circumstance

Guess it's that time. The graduation march. The build phase officially ended this week. Now I guess the adjustment phase starts, and I suppose in the next few months, the maintenance phase will begin.

I'll have to do this in multiple posts to get all the info in. Since I didn't do a build thread, I'll start with my list of Features, Components, Modifications, Alterations, Fix’s, Extras, Upgrades, Options, Changes and Additions, in multiple posts because of the 10,000 character limit. Then, because I can only post 5 pic's at a time, I'll post the photos in 3 or 4 posts. I have to say, those of you that did do build threads, I don't know how you had time to build a car and chronicle it in a build thread. I barely had time to read the threads, let alone do one. My hat's off to you.

I originally bought a used kit that had been started by the original owner. I figure I probably have done about 90% of the build since then. The original owner estimated he had about 200 hours in it, and I have kept a build log and tallied 1712 hours.

As of today, I have 450 miles on the car (I stopped and took a picture of the odometer when it hit 427...), and most things are working just fine. A few little things, like a valve cover oil seeping, and a temperamental cooling fan relay, etc., will need to be addressed in the adjustment phase. But the big things like electrical, lights, running, starting, and stopping all seem good.

Some of the things I put in the build I'm very glad I did, and a few things I'm not so sure. Some of the items I really like are the breeze radiator shroud, front battery mount, and stainless roll bar, Alex's wheel well liners, the old school carbureted 427 SBF (it's loud, rough, a little temperamental, and a bit smelly-like me), all LED lighting, stereo (just fine around town), adjustable seat sliders and power steering. Some of the stuff I'm not so sure about is the hydraulic clutch (works very good, but I had a hard time with master cylinders and line leaks, maybe still do), and the TKO 600 with the .82 5th gear. It's absolutely perfect for town/city driving, but a tad low gear for freeway driving above 65mph. Maybe that's a good thing-it will keep me from getting too carried away with the speed. I will say that there is definitely a learning curve on how to drive these things. Mine has already scared me enough to teach me that I don't really know how to drive it (yet). It has more horse power than should be allowed by law. Ooooh, did I just say that?

For those in California, here's my SB100 title and registration thread. https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/show...d-Registration

Anyway, on to the list... (the stuff in parenthesis are items I bought, but didn't use, at least not yet, because I changed my mind or couldn't decide on what to use.)

Beautifully crafted and lots of very nice quality detail touches. I really like the black accent pin stripe against your main colors. What did you cover your dash with?

Just some incredible builds graduating lately, the bar just gets higher & higher!

Hope you enjoy it, it never gets old...

Thank you all very much. I'm honored, and humbled, because a lot of the ideas came from all of you. There are so many talented and helpful builders here that have contributed a lot to my build, again I say thank you. There is a lot of all of you and a lot of your ideas in this build. So pat yourselves on the back.

Had the car out again today to a little car show at Golden Cove Center. It's a gas guzzler. I love it. Also, lots of waves and thumbs up.

Boyd, pet the dog. (my old dog, my miracle dog, is getting near the end. She's going to break my heart. 10 years ago we were both hurting and we saved each other.)

Chris, as I said, I didn't start the build, so the dash was one of those things that was already covered when I got it. I 'think' it's a patterned leather, or if it's vinyl, it's pretty darned good. So I'm not really sure...

Dave, the plate is my second. I started with FAYK SNK, but decided on this one afterwards. Make's it a bit easier when asked "Is it real?"

Steve (go Dad), Where is that Cajun Enthusiasm?

I will have to get the car back up on jacks, since I found a crack in the PS side pipe. It looks to be about an inch long so I hope I can just get it repair welded. The adjustment phase has officially begun.

Thought I would post some of those little things that make the build unique. Some of the items are copied from others, but changed or modified, and some are ideas that I came up with. Here goes... Part 1...

1 -- The upper rear-view mirror mount. Didn't want to drill holes in the body, and the bent angle mount seemed incomplete. So made it out of angle, with a piece welded in to hide the hardware.

2 -- Probably doesn't make that big of difference, but I didn't like the idea of the engine bay air (fumes) being pumped in by the heater blower. I made a shroud that gets it's air from the PS footbox. Here's the build thread on that https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/show...g-modification

3 -- Needed a radiator screen that was strong, non restrictive, and filled the intake fully. I didn't like the look of a square screen, so I used the stainless mesh as a backup and the honeycomb Nomex as the face, and ran it laterally to the sides of the intake. Painted it black, and I really like the results. Fan never comes on with the car moving above about 20mph, so it's getting a lot of air flow. It doesn't look like it, but it's all removable. The upper and lower aluminum holds the honeycomb, and under that there are upper, lower, and side aluminum pieces that hold the stainless steel mesh. Nothing actually touches or sits on the radiator itself.

4 -- Being such a small cockpit, needed some storage space. I made two pouches for the back cockpit bulkhead behind the seats, and two pouches for each side of the trans tunnel. They don't hold a lot, but every bit helps. Believe it or not, the trans tunnel top is still removable.

    Continued in Part 2

    Continued from Part 1....

5 -- Needed some passenger grab handles, 'cause I didn't want the panic grab to be the windshield or the shifter (not that I would ever drive like that...) In addition, I made the top of the transmission tunnel, and the lower door sills removable.

6 -- California wanted a back-up/reverse light. I really like how this came out. It's plenty bright.

7 -- The old Mk IV license plate light vs. trunk handle latch interference problem. I did the Kleiner license plate light modification, which took care of about 65% of the problem. I didn't want to cut the license plate, so I had Professor DaBat build up the mounting pad on the trunk lid about 1/4 inch or so, to make up the rest of the clearance needed. Can't even tell it was changed, a perfect solution IMHO.

8 -- The old side pipe hanger problem. It took me a month of thinking and pondering, but I came up with what I think, I hope, is a good solid fix. My hanger design is articulated on both ends with Heim joints, and allows the muffler to articulate and move in all directions, in-out, up-down, fwd-aft, yet still provides for upward support. A bonus is, it is somewhat adjustable. I have it set to provide about 20 pounds of lift. Time will tell if my design will hold up.

9 -- For some reason, my headlight lenses were 'clocked' about 6 or 8 degrees counter-clockwise in the buckets on both sides. I don't know if it was the FFR guy who did the cutouts messed up, or the tabs on the LED headlights are off, or what, but it was bugging me. The options were to take the buckets out and re-drill them, or re-drill the body, or re-drill the holding ring, or do something about those wimpy clips. I ended up making new, stronger, clips that I drilled the holes off center to allow the headlight lens to rotate to perfectly aligned.

There were dozens, maybe hundreds, more changes, modifications, additions, and fix's, but these are the one's that come to mind at the moment. Now take my ideas and make them better.

Almost forgot... Since I'm tooting my horn here, might as well post pics of my emergency roadside tool kit. It's virtually all Snap-On hand tools, with a battery jump booster, tire inflater, tire patch kit, and Power-Probe analyzer. It's got to be the most expensive tool kit in the country that I hope will never have to be used. But if need be, I think I could disassemble nearly the entire car with this set. Well, a lot of it anyway.

    Boat,

Sorry for my lack of enthusiasm in my earlier congratulatory response.
I was hanging side pipes yesterday in anticipation of my 2nd / 1st start and it took me all day to get them hanging right.

So with the cat out of the bag all I can say is:

    Ayeee & Congratulations!

Though I'm not of Cajun descent, Baby Geaux-Dad is a U.L.L. Ragin Cajun (2nd Year) studying Architecture.
Again, please accept my apology for my previous lack luster, under the top, earlier response!

Congratulation Again, But This One Is Coming From The Central Business District Of New Orleans!

So I read and saved your post about the heater shroud. I agree and was planning to put a tube on the intake of the heater only to realize that it is sucking air from both ends and the shroud you made is exactly what I was thinking of trying to make... BUT, I was thinking of running the tubing out to the front to collect cold/fresh air. I checked out the heater valve (heater hose valve) and find that it cuts out 99.9% of water flow so that would mean that I could have cool fresh air coming into the cabin via the same ducts the heater uses.... Do you think that would work like that? I could even run the heater fan and not need an external fan. Am I missing something? Would you be willing to share your drawings/measurements for the shroud?

Thanks for the beautiful car to aspire to...

I have run the heater blower with the heater valve closed, and yes, it does move air around the knee area (where my vents are), but it's not what I would call cool air. It's probably a degree or two warmer than ambient just due to the fact that it is recycling the PS foot box air. I do have pretty good insulation in the footbox's with heat shields on the engine compartment side, and Lizard Skin and carpet on the cockpit side, so it's more of just a subtle fan. The fresh air blowers do seem to provide slightly cooler air, since they are ducted from the brake cooling ducts in the front. Nothing short of air conditioning will actually cool, but air movement helps when sitting in traffic. Moving along you can't even tell if the blowers are working.

If you go the shroud route, here's a thread I did a while back on my blower mod and shroud fab. Also, make sure you leave enough room between the blower intakes and the interior of the shroud ALL around the blower motor in order to maximize airflow. https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/show...g-modification. I don't really have any plans or sketches for the shroud, I just started with some Cheerios box cardboard, and mocked up a version, and went from there. HTH...

I wanted to get your opinion on the Engine Factory. I'm considering the 427 from them and was hoping you could share your thoughts on it. Specifically, how do like driving around town with a 427? Any other thoughts would be much appreciated. And your car looks fantastic. Thanks, Pat
