Accelerator Pedal - Dialing it In Questions

Hey all. Still trying to dial in my accelerator pedal and forte linkage. Does anyone know what the approximate range of motion the accelerator pedal should have? If we are talking on a 360 degree scale, the way I have mine setup, I have about maybe 55-60 degrees worth of travel?

Here's my pedal at its longest travel and is bolted to the stock location. It rubs the Thermo Tec a tiny bit on the inside wall. Sorry about the orientation of the pics. Photobucket won't let me rotate them. Or at least I'm not sure how to do it if there is a way.



The Forte linkage hits the 3/4 tubing at the longest travel. Is this OK for a pedal stop?



And here's my pedal's starting position if the pedal bracket is straight up and down. I looked at drilling another hole, but I'd have to shift it over about 1/4" to get a clean hole away from the other. Not opposed to that but wanted to get some feedback through pics before I alter it.

I've never done a direct linkage like you are working on, but the general idea of any throttle linkage is to ensure proper opening and closing of the butterflies in the carb/TB. At rest, the throttle should be at the closed position and at full travel of the pedal, the butterflies should be full open. Use a throttle stop to prevent the linkage from extending past full open. With a solid linkage, the lengths of the levers and position of rods will affect the butterfly range of operation.

Thanks Dave. So I guess the gist of what you are saying is that I really need to wait until I have the engine in and carb hooked up before I can get a real sense of where i need to be? Makes sense. Was just trying to get as much as I can get done before putting the inside driver wall back in.

Do it when the engine is in. You may find to cut the rods and adjust the angles to your liking. The key is to have a smooth movement, and good spring on carburetor to move everything back.

You may want to check out the Russ Thompson gas pedal. You can position it where needed along the 3/4 tube without drilling a new hole - uses set screws to hold it in place.

Hey there.... you will want to wait until that 427 is in and you can hook up the linkage. It is a surprising very little movement from idle to full throttle. I just went and measured mine for you... the total travel of the throttle, at the carb is 1 1/4" (1.25") from idle to full throttle. Also, for the throttle stop, I put a bolt in the 2nd hole that is directly behind the pedal rail that stops my pedal just shy of full open throttle... I figure that I should really never have to have "FULL" throttle to have fun... but I'm not leaving a lot on the table either. I hope this will help you...

Thanks for measuring Carl. That’s a big help Bud! Man, that’s not much movement at all! I just sent payment to Russ for his accelerator pedal. I didn’t realize it was so easy to adjust and I need some clearance to the right side of the pedal and don’t really like how the top of the pedal hits the 3/4” tube with the setting I have. I may use your pedal stop idea depending on how the RT pedal sits. Let you know how it works out.

I agree, unfortunately you can do much but a guess until you are driving the car. I like a slightly longer than normal pedal travel so it's easier to modulate the power.

2.5 inch of pedal travel is about right.

Thought I'd follow up on this. Just received my RT accelerator pedal and it was just what the doctor ordered. Nicely made and gives the clearance needed when hooked up to the Forte mechanical linkage where the linkage doesn't touch anything through the full range of motion. Satisfied customer!! Oh yeah, anyone need a stock pedal?
