Buying Motor and Transmission - Need Help
I have a MK4 Roadster that I'm finally going to start putting together after it sat for a few years. I have a 3 link solid axle that I just bought all new parts for and I want to order the motor and transmission ASAP. I will be using a Gen 2 Coyote.
Can I use a T56 Magnum with a Coyote and a 3 link solid axle???
I have been told by some people that it will not work. I've also been told by a couple people that it will work and they have seen it done or are running that setup.
People that say it won't work say that the driveshaft will be too short unless you're running IRS.
The guys that said it will work told me that the Coyote is shorter from front to back than a Windsor so that allows space for a driveshaft that is long enough.
I had a fully built 10 second 04 Cobra with a T56 and I loved that transmission. I plan on doing some drag racing with this car and eventually doing a supercharger so I want the T56 Magnum because I know it can handle the high RPM of the Coyote, hard launches, fast shifting, and high horsepower. I know the TKO 600 is extremely popular but I've also seen dozens of people complaining about them leaking, not shifting well at high RPMs, and not holding up on boosted cars.

Please know that a T56 6-Speed and 3-Link can be done, but not easily since that transmission is so darn long.
This build has a Coyote and a T56 that coughed up the driveshaft at the end of the 2nd video, probably because the driveshaft length was crazy short.
The Excessive Horse Power Likely Had Some Influence Too!

I pulled off a 383 Dart (SBC) with a New Old Stock C-4 Corvette ZF 6-Speed and a 3-link rear and it fits well.
These transmissions only came in the Corvette's from 1989-1996 in both the conventional pushrod V-8s and overhead cammed ZR-1 cars.

Maybe a ZF gearbox can be adapted to the Coyote platform, but that is something is way over my head; however, there is someone who may be able to help.
That person is Bill Boudreaux, The ZF-Doctor, who is located in Arizona.

Heck, a low mileage C-4 may make a great donor build and nobody has done an early LT5 ZR-1 Four Cammer in any Factory Five as far as I know.
Shown below is that vintage engine when it was 1st produced some 25-Plus years ago at the Mercruiser facility.

I tried to install a T-56 Magnum, it wasn't pretty.
Take it from someone who's tried installing a T-56 in a gen. 2 coupe (same dimensions as MK4), it isn't worth the hassle. To properly install it you'll definitely need to go to an IRS setup, and you'll either need to move the engine mounts forward or the 4" diameter cross member that the trans mount tab is on will need to be moved backward. The over-all length difference from the engine mounts to the trans-mount between the tko 600 and T-56 M is about 2", the output shaft increases the total length difference by even more. My drive shaft was litterally 2 CV joints welded togeather

As I said on the other forum I did body & paint on a Mk4/Coyote/T56/3 link a few years ago. The Coyote is not as long front to rear as a Windsor so when it is placed on the FFR mounts even though the T56 is longer the bellhousing and trans wind up farther forward than they are with the pushrod engine effectively negating that extra length which makes the combination workable.

Jeffski,
I hope our new friend/member can pull it off because 6 forward gears is another gear for fun, no matter what V-8 is powering it.
The further forward he can scoot that Coyote will definitely help the angle of the drive shaft dangle.
On another note, that tip you gave me really has helped more than you can imagine.
My brother was blown away when he stopped by for dinner last evening.
