Hard Top Winch
Does anyone have, or done research on a Garage Winch for your Hard Top? Saw this one on the Internet. It says the limit is 100 pounds per Winch. Operated by your Smartphone. I am going to have the Dan Ruth Hard Top. Windshield stays on car for easier removal. Not sure what the finished weight might be??

Another exciting tool to make life easier. I've used radio controlled winches before and one thing that annoyed me is the short delay (delay on & off). On long pulls it wasn't a problem but when you needed to "bump" the winch that was a problem. A pendent style remote is instant on & off which affords greater control. Not sure the smart phone activated control would have the delay but I'm just throwing that out there so you're aware of it.
Also, something else to be cognizant of is that your roof trusses are designed to support roof loads and they do that by a design that distributes the forces through nodes in a very specific way. When you add a lifting component to a lower horizontal element you are adding a load that may not have been considered in the design of the truss. I'd be hesitant to put any significant point load on a ceiling joist as they are not normally designed for that. So lifting engines from a ceiling joist is not a good idea. However, intuitively I wouldn't worry about lifting a couple hundred pounds from a ceiling joist especially if I used something like 1/4"x3"x3" angle iron to spread the load across two or three joists. I've spent enough time in attics walking on joists to have a fairly good idea of what I can get away with but remember, walking on a joist is a temporary load and if you hang a hundred pounds from a joist for weeks at a time that may cause some permanent bending of the joist. Better to beef up your winch mounting point to spread the load across adjacent joists.

Thanks Naz, Was thinking of that. Was going to go up in attic and put a beam across 3-4 joists to spread the load. Was thinking of a PVC padded tube to go under the front of the Top, and 2ea padded hooks to attach to the rear. Dan's Top does not include the front window, so it should be light enough. I am a 1-person household, and no immediate help to take on and off. Having my Grandkids to help, might not be a good idea for my upcoming $$$$$$ paint job!?!?! Texas can be a bit like AZ. Really hot days when A/C is needed, and beautiful days to have a Roadster.

I was just looking at winches at Harbor Freight. They have one that appears similar to what Erik is using and they are rated at 220 lbs and 650 lbs. I agree with the roof load instructions so would probably keep in the 220 lb range.

I have been thinking about a four post design with two cross rods that would go through the window openings. When the (4) vertical lift rods were raised slightly, the car could be driven out from under the top. Just a concept at the moment, I am sure it creates it's own challenges .
