Power Steering Connections
All,
Would like to confirm the connections to/from to my Power Steering Rack.
PS Rack Connections.jpg
The connection from the PS pump goes to the black cap location (9/16") ?
The connection back to the PS reservoir connects to the red cap location (5/8") ?
Appreciate the confirmation/correction.

These fittings (just ordered from Breeze) have an o-ring on them. Anybody know what they should be torqued to ?

Before installing them be sure that you don't have sharp points at the beginning of the female threads into the rack; if so ease them a bit with emery cloth so that they don't cut the O-ring. When tightening the fittings just make them snug enough so that the ring is compressed---if you really crank down on them you run the risk of either cutting the o-ring or squeezing it out of place.

Jeff - great advice. Thanks for the guidance.

Do you agree with the connection schema described above ?

On the Mustang PS rack, the lower (smaller) hole is the high pressure line and is connected to the output of the PS pump. The upper (larger) hole is the low pressure line and is connected to the return line on the reservoir. BTW, if you're using a cooler, is goes in-line between the rack low pressure connection and the reservoir.
Don't get them backwards. Bad things happen.

Yeah, no kidding! If you reverse them as soon as the pump makes pressure it will slam the steering wheel to full lock! Amusing, and thankfully harmless story...while building the Coupe at SEMA last year Ron & I were putting on the hoses. He said "pressure to the bottom, right?" I said "yeah, sounds right". Later on they brought Joey Logano in to do the first start for TV. He was seated with hands on the wheel and about to reach for the ignition. I leaned over and said "Do me a favor and take your hand off the wheel when you start it" then whispered to Ron "Roger Penske would be really pissed if we break Joey's wrist!" He fired it up and all was good but I could only imagine what might have happened if we had been wrong with our connections

In error, I reversed my power steering lines on assembly. And, though I thought they were correct, they were not. My hands were on the steering wheel when I first started it and almost broke my wrists. A shocking surprise. Also, I blew a seal shortly after that and needed to replace the unit. The power steering unit was replacable but my wrists are not.
