I'll make the general comment that if you are installing in the stock location with the intake tube going under the intake manifold that a 3" turbo is a pain to install. I have that on my STI and I swore I would never do a 3" again in a stock location. According to the tuners I've talked with they see virtually no performance difference between a full 3", a 3" with an adapter necking down to the oem size intake, and an oem size turbo inlet at less than 450 HP. To do a 3" well you'd want to go rotated or neck it down with an adapter, which is often included in the kit. I know ATP includes them with their 3" Subaru turbo kits.
My other comment is are you sure you want 450TQ /450 -500HP? Trying to use that much power on the street, or even on a track in racing conditions, is not easy in a 2000 lb car with two wheel drive.
As for the choice of turbos, I personally stick with Garrett or Borg Warner cartridges; externally gated. Today we're first starting an Outfront closed deck 2.5 with a ATP 3576 built in externally gated turbo. I expect it will be great in my 3000 lb AWD STI, but would be too much in the 818R. And yes it has the 3" inlet, but only because I had it all left over from the prior engine and turbo. If I ever go this big again on a new build it will be rotated.

Thanks for replying, Yes it will be rotated, I decided after hearing no response that I would go one step smaller in a TD06 20G ball bearing gtx wheel so MAX 420hp. I figured this would come in sooner and give me the flat torque curve I am looking for. As this is a track car I can always pull power but I cant add it easily so to speak. Plus I am planning on having traction control with the Haltech ECU.

Gator, was that even with the large "phenolic spacers" on the intake manifold? I believe those help with the larger inlet.

Yes. In fact I don't think it's possible without them. If you use the 3" special offset silicone hose from Agency Power it's easier. But I still wouldn't do it again. Plus the 3" bend at the power steering pump is another problem, but obviously not on a manual rack 818.
