    New Option for Diffuser Strakes

If you're not a fan of the FFR strakes with the rivet flange, this might interest you. This was another "customer request" project on one of the GTM's we're currently building in our shop, so figured I might as well make it available to others. This is Gen I but also available for Gen II.....the only difference being a minor change in the shape and height of the strakes.

That's funny, I was thinking about the diffuser yesterday, and whether I would be making my own strakes. I haven't looked at the diffuser in ages...there are no slots, you make your own, right? Is there a trick to this? Also, for function, is it better that the strakes are parallel or diverging?

I would think for function, parallel is the way to go. If you had diverging, it would slow the flow down as the strake opened and I believe that to be counterintuitive to what you actually want.

    Looks great Shane.

Yes, you do need to make your own slots in the diffuser for these. I have the strakes spaced at 8-5/8" on center. Since the new strakes are .080", I used a .080" drill bit and drilled 3 holes right next to each other at one end of the slot, then used a small dremel bit to grind out between the drill holes to open it up to one small slot big enough to get my body saw blade into. Used the body saw to cut along each side of the slot, then used a cutting wheel on an air angle grinder to dive down thru the slot to open it up (cutting wheel is .065" thick) so some gentle working from side to side smooths the edges of the slot up and widens it out to allow clearance for the strake tabs to fit thru. Sounds like a lot of messing around....and it kind of is......but I think from start to finish on cutting the slots, it took me about right at an hour for the 12 slots.

I will have my powdercoater mask off the very top edge of the strakes along with the tabs so that they don't get powdercoated. Then I will insert all of them into the diffuser and put a strip of masking tape about 1/8"-3/16 up on the strake and also out onto the diffuser on both sides of each strake and plow that area full of epoxy and scrape the epoxy flush with the tape edge. I'll mask off a small rectangle around each tab on the top side of the diffuser and do the same thing. Then install the squaring jig and let it cure. Once cured, pull the masking tape off to leave a nice clean, straight line where the epoxy meets the diffuser and strake to leave a perfect little "fillet weld" of epoxy on both the top side and bottom side of the diffuser. Should look pretty clean and seamless when it's all done.

Shane, can these be installed with the between the strake louvers? I have a set of them from you and intend to install them in the diffuser so any ideas?

You would have to grind just a bit of clearance into the edges of the louver perimeter to clear the tabs on the strakes.....the squaring fixture to hold the strakes positions them at 8.625" on center. The outer perimeter of the Between Strakes Diffuser Louvers is 8.64" wide....so just a hair of material would have to be shaved off where the tabs come thru the diffuser. About .050" off each side if my math is right.
