Mk4 Roadster Build Video: Body Work

The Mk4 Roadster build videos are back! It's been a while, but we've got several new build videos filmed, and we've been working on getting them edited for you. One of the most requested videos has been on body work. We've broken the steps up into a few videos, and in the first one, Tony and John give you an overview of the steps they take to get the body ready for paint. Click here to visit our YouTube channel to watch more build videos and subscribe - https://www.youtube.com/factoryfive/.

Great timing for me, other than I filled the wheel well lip as shipped. Nothing a body saw cannot handle.
Really looking forward to the rest of the body work tips.

Well Miller, I guess this means our party is over. Looks like you, Ken and me are gonna' just have to do like you said years ago... "Sit on the porch drinking sweet tea and shooting squirrels off of the fence posts". It was a good ride while it lasted

No way, Jeff. That video will likely cause you more work in the long run as more of us amateurs start hacking up the wheel arches and over trimming doors, hood, and trunk based on gapping them on poorly positioned bodies. Looks more like job security in the making to me.

    Errrr,

Paint & Body is one of those things where you need to know what you don't know. I know I don't want to do the necessary prep it will take to get the finish I want, my wife won't left me have a spray booth, and I'd do a rather poor job at it anyway. Then, when I take it to a guy that knows what he's doing to fix my mess, I'll embarrass myself, shaming pictures of my failed craftsmanship get posted on the internet, and it cost more...much more.
FFR MKIV ordered 12 July 2019. IRS, Wilwood Brakes, 18" Wheels w/MT tires, power steering, EFI, Heat. 347 Dart w/TKO-600 by Mike Forte, Holley FI, MSD coil and CD box. All new, no donor build.

I hear ya, Jeff. I know when my dad was doing body & paint that he would not accept anyone's attempted body work. His reputation was more important than cranking out quick product.

BTW - Thanks for the update and pictures on my car today! It looks incredible.

Part 2 of the Mk4 body work videos is now live. In this video, John goes over the tools he uses and then starts trimming the fenders.

Ha! I noticed they chose to show the "easy" one as well. Still a good set of videos for those that want to take on the bodywork themselves. I used the same method of running a tape line to do the initial hood fitting just to get it to sit in the opening. I left the rest to Mr. Kleiner.

Have you guys thought about coming to Louisiana to shoot some Nutria for a living as a new career path?
The state pays you $5.00 per tail, which is proof they are dead, so come on down and start your new careers.

    https://youtu.be/8TU_IZzxNyQ

Just need an airboat, a club and a 10/22 and you guys will be in business.

Steve, that seems too much like work. What you don't understand is that when Brother Bat and I say ""Sit on the porch drinking sweet tea and shooting squirrels off of the fence posts" it's really code for ""Sit on the porch drinking." Period. The squirrel part is just to make it sound like we might be doing something remotely useful.

You can sit in your Air Boat and hoist a few as long the boat isn't running and the game wardens aren't around.

After watching those videos I’m SO ready to start my own bodywork!!!!!!

(then fork over twice as much money to daBat to fix it!)

I’m not touching a thing until I get yay or nay instructions from Jeff.

But the driver side door is just so much fun!

Body filler to build it up is extensive before you start sanding.

Passenger side is much better to get it perfect.

Like almost everything in life there is more than one way to do things. Back 10-12 years ago I used to load the doors up with some pretty heavy mud (not as much as shown in the pics above) but have learned other ways to go about making them fit that don't take anywhere near as much filler or labor:

No right way or wrong way as long as you get the results you want just use whatever method that works for you!

If you stuff a Chevy in your car, then I suggest you paint it yourself!
I think you should stand in the corner.

    Duke-

Your body work turned out beautifully!! And, that is doubly tough on a black car. Your car is truly stunning!!

I can't imagine how much work went into it, but it is awesome!!

    Regards,

    Hey Mad Dog
When do we get some more bodywork videos? The ones you did were great but I’m sure you have lots more information to share. Oscar nominations are coming soon. You don’t want to be left out...
