Trunk struts push trunk lid out of whack
I just finished up rehabilitating a Mk3 Roadster. The trunk lines up nicely except when I install the new struts. The struts push the trunk out of place, causing about a 3/8" bow at the corner where the trunk turns downward. When I remove the struts, the trunk lines up properly once again. My new struts are the same rating (30 lb) as the originals. Does anyone know of a fix for this, or am I destined to use a prop-stick?

One approach I used was lighter struts & tightened hinge bolts. That said my lighter struts were 30lbs.

I'm assuming your MK3 has the external hinges as opposed to the Mk4's internal hinges. I had the same problem with my Mk3. I switched to lower pressure struts and that helped with alignment. But they also didn't really hold it open. Made it easier to open and close, but wouldn't hold it in the full open position. A prop rod isn't terrible. Another option is the catch type prop rod. I have this on my Mk4 instead of gas struts. I actually like it a lot. https://www.**********accessories.co...rod-trunk.aspx.

Go with a rod. I had a friend who blew one of his hinges apart one day closing the trunk. They are made of a really weak metal.

Thanks for the input. I purchased a catch-type prop rod made by Locar and it has remedied the issue.
