    Zero Decibel Hood Hinge Installation

    Hi All,

Zero Decibel makes some really great products. Among them is the hood hinge.

Working through the installation I wanted to find out what foam board to use. This piece of foam gets fiber glassed to the hood as a mounting point for the hinge bases. Problem is, or at least for me was to find out what readily available foam board would be resistant to the fiberglass resin.

First off, DO NOT use the pink foam board.

Home Depot sells a foam board called Rmax R-Matte 3 that has aluminum facing on both sides. However, it is the make up of the foam that is really important. It is a polyisocyanurate type of foam.

I did a test and it does not disintegrate.

I find the pink foam board much easier to work with for most applications. You just have to seal it with something before applying the resin. cheap latex paint works fine.

I used these threaded studs from McMaster and bonded them directly to the hood. They held well in intense AZ desert heat for 5,000 miles.
