Doug, How is the build progressing? Thanks again for letting me visit and sit in your coupe. That helped me pull the trigger on my coupe kit. My garage is about the same size. I'm going to rent a small storage unit for the boxes that I'm not working with at the time.

Yes Steve. Broke ground on Nov 4th and finished today. They started erection yesterday at noon and finished today at noon. I'm very pleased with the outcome. The holiday added an extra week to the process.

My delivery is sometime in early/mid summer. Gives me time to set up the garage the way I want and to assemble the tools and custom parts I will need/use.

Hey Steve. Yep good visit. Glad you got one on order. sounds like part shortage is hurting everyone. My Coupe made it to the body shop back in Oct. They just moved to a new location and didn't have the paint booth set up. Fast forward to last week and the paint booth sounds like its ready, The Coupe will break in the booth. 1st car to be painted. but 1st up is primer and block sanding. most of the body work is complete. Still waiting on the motor and transmission. good thing is the warranty on that has not yet started. here is a pic of the car as it sat last week. Maybe by summer. be tearing up around town. . Doug

Hey Skuzzy. Thanks. ya had it built to hold 2 cars if needed. but mostly for me to tinker around. It still fills up quickly with the Coupe, Zero Turn, 2 street bikes and now grandkids ride-on's. Garages are never big enough. doug.

New Tools

One of the things I noticed reading the build threads is we all love the idea of getting new tools. So do I!!

Another thing I have noticed is that there could be some confusion with the number of different aluminum panels on the coupe and where they should go. I've always wondered how everyone could keep them straight after removing them to get them finished. Taking a lot of pictures and good notes is probably a must do. When I was ordering my flare kit from Eastwood (which arrived yesterday) I noticed a 36 piece letter and number stamp set. (Also on sale!!)

My plan is when I am sure of a panels location I will stamp a letter or number code on both the panel and the spot on the chassis where it goes. If I do it in the same location on both I will then know where the panel goes and the proper orientation of said panel. If the stamp chips the powder coat on the chassis I can either touch it up or leave it as is because it will get sealed by the silicone and covered by the panel anyway. As long as I don't get to aggressive with my punching, once the panel is mounted the stamped code will not be seen.

I received a call from Dave Smith today. Really, the owner of Factory Five calling me?? He mentioned he read my build thread and he asked how I was doing health wise. Told him I saw my oncologist this morning and I'm good to go for another 4 months! He asked if my garage was ready and we talked about some options.

I have said it before, this family is indescribable. What the builders, buyers and forum members will go out of their way to do to help others is something I have never experienced before. Now to have the owner of the company really concerned about one of their customers is unheard of in this day and age. Every other company should take lessons from Dave and the rest of the employees at Factory Five. And every person should experience and take lessons from the folks on the forum about paying it forward. The world would be a better place.

I will always be grateful and thankful to everyone. I hope to be able to pay it forward as well as I have received.

One of my other hobbies is HO Model Railroading. My layout is a DCC (Digital Command Control) setup. It means it is basically computer controlled. The computer will be able to tell which tracks trains are on, automatically switch tracks etc.

I am working on this section of the layout at the present time.

I saw a set of plans for wood work benches. I don't remember where. I believe it was somewhere on this site. I spent the weekend cutting, gluing and screwing these benches together working on getting the garage ready. The garage will collapse before these benches do!!

Maybe. Talking to a friend about spray foam. Not a large volume so it wouldn't take long to warm up with a salamander even without insulation. It's a lot of square footage at $20 - $30 a sheet for the foam board. Rather spend that on upgrades/tools.

Supporting member and proud of it

While I have been on the forum I have noticed that some members were "supporting" members and I was confused at what that was. I didn't know what was involved to become one but was very interested in it as this forum was the driving factor in me making the decision to purchase a kit and I plan to rely on it as I build my Coupe. If there was a way to support the forum I wanted to do so. Well I finally figured it out and am proud to say that I have become a supporting member myself!

Health Scare

As I've stated earlier in my thread, I have Leukemia. I take a pill every day that is keeping the cancer at bay. It gets sent to me once a month via FedEx. The retail cost of this medication is $20,000.00 per month! (No that is not a typo. Twenty THOUSAND dollars a month) I have very good insurance thru my employer and only pay $10.00 a month. My insurance is considered a high deductible plan and I have to shell out the first $3500.00 of medical costs before the insurance kicks in. I met that requirement last month so my pills shouldn't cost me anything this month. I received the call last week for my upcoming scheduled pill delivery this week. No problems. Then on Saturday I received another call from the pharmacy that my coverage had ran its course and I needed to send them $1900.00 before they would send my pills! Even after explaining how I should be receiving them at no charge they would not listen. Knowing that these pills are what is keeping the cancer at bay I figured I would use my health savings account money to make the payment and fight it out later to try to get my money reimbursed. You guessed it. My charge was denied. It's Saturday. Couldn't contact anyone to try to straighten this out. You can imagine what the rest of my weekend was like.
Good news. First thing this morning I was on the phone with my company, the insurance company and the HSA card company. Got a call from the pharmacy at 4:00pm telling me they had worked with my insurance company and were sending my pills out free of charge!
I can just imagine what nightmares I will have in May when I retire and go on Medicare.

To keep my mind off the above nightmare I worked on the garage today.

Running the cable thru underground PVC conduit from the house to the garage. Dug the trench. Glued the PVC together. Pushed/pulled the cable thru. Wouldn't want to do that for a living! Installed the glued together PVC/wire into the trench.

Did have help from my neighbor who is a backyard mechanic. I think he is just as excited about this build as I am.

I hope your building ordinances are better than ours. My external garage was restricted to 100A of 220V service. I have to shut off my 60 gallon compressor before I can use my MIG welding machine as one of them might trip the breaker if they run at the same time.

You do what you have to do. Your garage is looking good.

The sad thing about these wonder drugs is they price them so no one can afford them. You read about people making the choice between their meds and the heat bill.... well it's true. Hope to never get to that point. Don't know what I would choose.

The retired electrician I'm working with said we could run 200 amp service from the house to the garage but the oldish panel board in the house will only accept a 125 amp fuse so it's 200 amp wire to a 200 amp board to carry 125 amp service. I could have gone with a 150 amp board and wire but they are considered special and cost more.

I built for years and perhaps things are different in your jurisdiction but here (Indiana) any horizontal run for electrical service must be buried no less than 30 inches deep. It may be that you aren't undergoing inspections on your garage project but if you are it would be prudent to make sure that you're in compliance now rather than finding out that you aren't later. Just a heads up.

Feels like Christmas

Been ordering misc items. Having packages delivered to the house feels like Christmas! Too me, For me, From me!

Received the safety wire tool and the wire from Summit today. I will never drive the car in such a way as to really need these but I feel better knowing they are there.

Having a crushed stone driveway has me a little concerned with deliveries. I know that Stewart has a dolly that can be used to get the car into the garage but I don't know if the wheels would dig into the stone or not. The motor and trans will also be substantial and will not come with a dolly. Just a drop lift truck at the curb. With that in mind I ordered 4 dolly wheels from Tractor supply.

Each is rated at 300 lbs and has foam filled rubber tires. The plan is to use a left over piece of 3/4 inch plywood (4'x4') and some 2"x4"s to make my own dolly. Will post finished pics tomorrow for every ones critique.

While those casters are better than the tiny 2-3" solid ones, they still won't roll over crushed gravel very well. You may be able to use a tow strap and pull the dolly across the gravel with an ATV, lawn tractor, pickup, whatever you have... but I don't suspect you'll be able to push by hand a 600+ pound load over anything but a paved surface with those. How long is your driveway? If plywood wasn't so expensive, you could lay a couple sheets down for a temporary surface to roll things across.

Otherwise, I suggest asking the freight delivery drivers to back into your driveway if possible. Many drivers are more than accommodating, if they have the space to pull it off, despite what the fine print in the terms of the sales-order states. Good luck!
