818 Wiring Harness Deletion Question
We are currently plowing through the colossal mass of the wiring harness and its modification, getting rid of the systems that we don't need. It seems to me the first step should be to delete the ABS and Air bag system "en total" as I don't plan to use them and they are bulky. Anything I should watch out for as I forge ahead???
gracias,

One other question. Is there any fancy tool to "de-pin" the connectors?

That's a good place to start, as most of the airbag connectors are yellow, and there's one big ABS connector to follow backwards. I recommend following each wire for the system to be deleted and cut it at the first splice. Put a dab of fingernail polish on the cut end to insulate it and leave the splice and other wires. If you reach another connector to something you plan to keep, like the instrument gauge, leave a couple of inches of wire there in case you need to power or ground it to keep things happy. If you later reach a splice with only 1 other wire left, ignore the splice and keep following the wire.
It IS a tedious process, but it prepares you for the next step, which is mounting the fuse boxes where you want them and lengthening the wires that are too short. And then, if you care to, shortening the wires that are too long. The reward at the end is having most everything work properly.
Hope your dieting goes well,

This is a good reference on connectors and what systems to delete. It all depends on what features you want to retain.

Yes, I love Technology
My info here shows you how to make tools and release pins on connectors. The various connectors almost all use some variation of a plastic bar with a hook or protrusion on the end of it that catches a bit of metal about halfway along the associated pin. There are maybe 8 or 10 variants but all seem to follow a similar release scheme - not exactly but close enough with study you can figure them out without destroying them. Or practice on some of the ones you know for sure are coming out.
