Cool Paint Your Coupe in Your Garage!

I posted yesterday in the other place, but thought I'd post here for folks who don't frequent both places anymore.

As a first-time car painter, I created a summary of my lessons learned. These are things that I thought the first-timer would want to know after reading the excellent bodywork and paint threads offered here and on the other site.

A couple of pics of the results. Now, we just need to finish assembly!

Coupe #497 delivered 7/29/10. Engine in on 10/1/10. Pushcart on 10/4/10. First start on 12/01/10. First go-cart on 12/31/10. Finished and on the road as of February 2012.

I just read your "painting lessons learned by a novice". You have my admiration for taking on such a task. I have chosen to have a friend paint mine and after reading about all your experiences it makes me feel better about how much my paint and body work is going to cost. Your detailed descriptions, candor and humor really are informative. Thank you for taking the time to give us all and overview of your paint experience!! This portion of the "build" is beyond me.

Very good pointers and a great looking car. One question; did you consider trying to rent a shop to spray the car in? There are a few painters I know that would gladly rent out the booth for not much if any more than you spent on materials. But you do now have your own spray booth should he need ever come up to paint something else.
    Good job.

I'm impressed. The coupe looks great and your write up is very well done. Please post other pictures as you move along with your build.

Are these cars generally painted body off, or do some chose to do final body mounting, install windshield and paint body on? Just thinking down the road.

Thanks, Steve! We have over 5,000 miles on the Coupe now and still love it. Here's a few pics of the finished car: http://www.flickr.com/photos/5361485...7629333697750/

wazoo, I have not read about anyone painting the car with the body mounted, but with enough tape and masking paper I suppose anything is possible. I doubt I'd be able to remove the body again without taking the windshield out, and that would come at great risk of breaking the windshield.
