    A/C evaporator installation difficulties

I just spent 90 minutes trying to position the evaporator following the A/C manual without much success. I was able to get it positioned but it is more angled to the right than shown in the manual. It would help if those of you have installed an evaporator could post some pics or point me to threads with
Pics. Thanks. Going for a beer now to get away from it for a while!

Also, can someone point me at instructions on how to embed photos in posts. Thanks!!

I talked about the evaporator mounting a little in this post. And you can see if mounted if you keep scrolling to following posts. https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/show...l=1#post350347. I don't know what to tell you. I mounted it exactly like the instructions explained. Important to get it that way for the connections to line up as shown.

There are several ways to embed pictures. I used the forum's gallery and link them. That's what you see in the link I provided. Explained here: https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/show...tures-in-posts. The process is a little fiddly at first. But easy to get the hang of and works fine.

Thanks. I had already looked at your thread. From studying the pictures further it looks like the drain plugs on the bottom of my evaporator are quite a bit longer. I think i can get it to work.

I have the evaporator installed a bit differently to the manual and am happy with it. It is very strongly supported as I ended up using 3 of the mount installations that are backed by blind nuts. Then I read Scott Pregont’s build thread and saw he used a heat gun to bend the drain tube - a definite forehead slapping moment for me! Nice job Scott. And I am happy with my install because it required some creative flattening and reshaping on two mounts and resulted in a solid install - I ended up with a strong feeling of accomplishment! And I will use Scott’s heat gun trick to gain more clearance on the drain fitting. Fun stuff. I’ll post some photos once I follow the instructions!

BE VERY CAREFULL WITH THE HEAT GUN!! That plastic will bend with just a small amount of heat applied and totally disfigure with to much heat. Take your time and less is more here!

I mounted it square to the chassis rather than angled. Had no issue hooking everything up. Do them all this way.

Thanks guys. I have it mounted at an angle and am happy with it. I am going to take it back out and then use the heat gun and will proceed with caution. I am now onto the hoses and the bulkhead mounts. Will see how these go. I may end up restarting and going square to the frame. It is a learning process.

Has anyone tried to mount this unit in an R model? There is a a diagonal bar the is right in the way. I can mount it much lower but would impinge on the foot well

I’m currently struggling with getting the duct hoses behind the dash. It is a very tight squeeze. The place I mounted the evaporator, which is pretty much per the manual, is fine. The “Y’s” where one hose coming from the evaporator splits into two are problematic for me right now. They just don’t point in the direction I would ideally like and make things difficult. Nothing that can’t be overcome. My point is you should figure out how you are going to run the ducting and where the Y connectors will be. I created a second small fuse box on the passenger side so that I didn’t have inline fuses for my USB, electronic parking brake, display mirror, and reverse lockout controller. Rather than the inline fuses being buried behind the dash they are in a small fuse box above the passenger’s feet, which is cleaner. But this eliminated some of the space I had for the ducting. I also have fire suppression lines and emitters in the same area. A lot going on!

Hey John - my son Ryan is 3D printing some ducts for my car with PETG so it will hold up under hot/cold conditions, maybe we could come take a look and do some measurements?

here's what mine look like - they'll obviously be different than your setup but this is going to make the placement a lot easier in the roadster

printed in red for test print, but the final will be done in black

Hey Todd, Great stuff! What I need is a connector for the defroster ducts, 2.5 inch on one end, 2 inch on the other two outputs, but rather than being a Y shape with 45 / 135 , I need 90 degree. I’ll send you a text with some pics. Thanks!!
