    Turn Signal

Purchased a used MK4 and it needs lots of work. Currently trying to get steering and wiring sorted out. This is the turn signal system that was in the car. I have no experience with these cars but I imagine you guys could help identify this? I'm looking for wiring instructions for it... however they had it set up, it was wrong.IMG_20240331_093707150_HDR.jpg

That looks like an early VW switch, I got mine from Richard Oben, but they are getting hard to find.

That is definitely a VW turn signal. The same type that Russ Thompson used to produce (RIP). I'll look for the wiring instructions, but I know there is lots of different ways these guys do the wiring. Mine has five wires, the fifth is for the button on the end of the shaft that Russ added. If I'm correct, you'll have four wires (left, right, ground and flasher). Many use an IDIDIT relay; below is the IDIDIT relay schematic and my handwritten schematic of the wiring.

Thanks Ted. I don't know much about the original builder, but from what I do know, I would guess that he used the Russ Thompson version. What I'd really like to do is replace the entire column with an ididit column. I've used these in the past on other projects and I like the quality and look of them. Any idea if there is one that will fit in these cars? I'm searching the forums, but not having much luck finding a solid answer.

I don't think there is enough room for the ididit column at all. I also think think they would stick out way too far into your lap.

Yea, I was a little worried about that. I know they make them in different lengths, but any of them that I've seen look too big. I havent' had much time to work on this thing (very frustrating), but once I do, I'll get it all figured out. Was just hoping for a simple fix. :-)

I used a Flaming River tilt column -- 32 inches long. This is on a MK I with a 460 motor.
