    Black edge on windshield question...

I know this topic has been discussed before on this forum but I can't find it.

What is used to "paint" the black edge around the windshield???? Once it is dry I plan on using 3M windshield adhesive, will it mark the black border or show through it???
    Thanks,
    Bob

windshield primer (black) - 3M Single Step Primer part number 08681

I got mine from Amazon. I don't recall the brand of adhesive used to install the windshiels, but it dows not show through.

One item of advice on the windshield primer. It doesn't take a second coat very well, so get it on thick enough in the first coat. Have a BRIGHT light around to check your work.

I tried the 3M primer and ended up with a big mess. It is 1 step...if you have to touch up anything (second step) it pulls the first pass up, big globs...I couldn't make it work. I removed it, another mess, then used a two part epoxy paint. I used an air brush ($10 Harbor Freight) and paint from the link below. $5 for the black and $10 for the catalyst plus shipping.

Make sure you clean the glass real well...I used acetone.

Just so you know...you are not suppose to let it sit too long before installing the glass. I was told to let the glass installer do it right before installation.

My understanding is that what you apply to the glass, if you want it to help hold the glass in, must be of the appropriate compound and applied just before installation of the glass so that it cures with the glass epoxy (or whatever you call it) to increase strength. Using any black paint will look good but it won't contribute to the safe installation of the glass.

You are best to call a glass installer and ask them.
