It performs better because Iron works better for heat management for turbo applications and the smaller diameter piping has a better graduation in size than most aftermarket pieces to minimize pre-turbo turbulence. If you want to increase exhaust flow, start with a bigger turbine housing vis-a-vis a bigger turbo. Then you can upsize your header and up-pipe, you don't want the exhaust getting 'pinched' as it enters the turbo but you also don't want the exhaust flow to decompress as it enters the turbo either.
Post turbo, go as big as you can with the least number of bends....
What BrandonDrums said...^^ I wished this were moved to a separate thread as has been suggested. I have ulterior motives.
I was just reading on this subject for quite a while today and my gleaned info mirrors this pretty well. I have several Full Race manifolds and the ID is not as big as some others, yet the SS wall thickness is impressive (I think Schedule 10). The smaller ID maintains the velocity, AFAIAC and helps with low RPM torque/faster spool. If the exhaust is unrestricted, as in a race car, then so much the better (for the top end).
After the turbo, you want no restrictions; hence some have a foot or less of pipe after the turbo.

The equal length headers do change the sound and like any part on the motor there are compromises in one aspect or another. Big volume headers/pre turbo slows spool up but overall will allow a higher peak HP. Now if your turbo runs out of airflow before the peak flow of the exhaust, then you have given up spool up for no benefit. You really need to worry more about getting the turbo size right than look for something different in headers than stock at 325 RWHP or lower.

The 6 speed thread is going again and I was wondering if you plan on doing your magic on the 6 speed like you did on the 5 speed? I will buy it.

I'll take it out for a quick spin/video this afternoon but I wish I had time to work on it. It still has not seen the dyno with the H6 in it :-(

Couple of H6 questions for you wayne.

Do you think an oem imprezza rad is enough for cooling? I expect 20min track sessions max, at least for now.

Can the TEC-GT run throttle by wire? I know you offer other ECU's like AEM, would you be able to offer any of them with a base tune and etune with datalogs?

Oh, and where's that video? Feels like I've been waiting months to hear it...

The last 20,000 were people checking to see if the latest post was a dyno video.

Not sure if you missed my questions above, perhaps it's time I give you a call so I can plan my engine stuff.

Great build Wayne and your 818 is a benchmark! I would like to know what type of wiring system that you laid out before splicing in the factory components?

Yes the Impreza radiator is plenty big.
The TEC-GT does not run drive by wire. I can set up the harness with AEM or your choice of ECU.

So no drive by video today

Thanks for the info, I'll hold off on an aluminum rad and installing my throttle peddle. I'll also look into some of the ecu's you've mentioned, see which is the most newbie friendly.

This winter has sucked overall I think for everyone (well not the people from Florida but they get hurricanes). Here in Dallas we have had a lot of flip flopping. 20 no 70 now repeat. It was I think 26 this morning but gonna be in the 60s and sunny (if you trust the weatherman). I would almost perfer it to pick a temp and stay there so people stop getting sick. But yes I can't wait for spring because then I start building :-)
