Never mind... Just noticed this was an 818 thread. Helps to pay attention. My Roadster response probably wasn't too helpful.

Craig,
Since the state of Indiana doesn't mandate a specific location for us I have always stood by with a number plate, drill and rivets at the ready when the police officer comes to verify and asked if they had a preference. In every case (all roadsters) I have suggested a location on the chassis beside the FFR stamped number and they have had no objection. I rivet the plate on, they sign the paperwork and we're done!

My VIN is in the exact same place as Jerome's. Michigan is a sticker just like Arizona.
Wow didn't even think of putting it in the door jam like that. I kinda wished I did that now. Maybe I will have the VIN plate from FFR engraved and installed there instead. At least it will be unique.
On the 818 I think the location next to the frame number is blocked when the car is put together. I used some letter stamps and used the FFR tag. I'll take a look at some spots today. Thanks guys.

The CT DMV lady decided she liked one of our riveted on aluminum panels (trim panel next to the dead pedal) despite our multiple frame location suggestions....

My Maryland MVA inspector insisted on riveting it to the fiberglass inside the driver side near the door striker. I tried to argue him out of it, but after 4 hours standing in the hot sun to get to that stage, I didn't fight very hard. I'll probably move it to the frame after my safety inspection.
Similar to Buzz, Illinois actually required the VIN tag to be located on the driver door jamb, on the body itself. The officer gave me some say over where on the jamb, but he did the riveting (Illinois uses special fancy rivets, so you can't ever drill it out and move it either)
MA state trooper had me put it next to the chassis # on the frame
Unlike Buzz, my Maryland inspector put the MD and FFR plates under the middle engine cover, on the left diagonal frame member. He apologized because the plates extended beyond the width of the frame. Later I added the Subaru donor VIN so that subsequent owners can easily get parts...
I ended up putting mine on the front of the frame where the little triangle is next to the upper A-arm.
