Sidepipe Mounting Variance
Got my headers back and mounted my sidepipes again. Maybe I just didn’t notice this the first time but the passenger side pipe sticks out from the body about 2” further than the drivers side. Driver’s side tip is aligned with the outer edge of the rear tire. The passenger side goes 2” beyond that outboard and is noticeable. Is this variance ‘normal’?

"Odd" fitting pipes are normal. Breeze sells different size wedges to help align them. Loosen the bolts and get them where you want them, then measure the gap at the header flange and get a spacer as close to that dimension as possible. They can be stacked if you need to get a thickness that isn't covered by a single wedge.

Perfect. Thanks Dave. Should a gasket be put between the shim and flange, then another one between flange and header?

They won't be perfect, trust me, but no I wouldn't say that's normal. The main criteria is that they're parallel to the body and level. If they're not parallel, that's when wedges are used. Most of us get them from Breeze. He lists how much they move the pipes, and sometimes you need to stack more than one to move enough. Every build I've done used these to some extent.

But one caveat. Do you have the body finally mounted including the doors adjusted and splash guards installed? Sometimes it's necessary to move the lower body in/out for the best door alignment. And the front splash guards can affect the pipe fit as well. I wouldn't recommend trying to get final alignment until these two steps, as a minimum, are completed.

See Paul's comments above. Maybe "typical" would have been a better choice of word than "normal". I had multiple sets of headers on my car and each set put the pipes in different positions. As for the gaskets, I used them because my car was not completed (painted), but others swear by copper RTV. I'll likely go that route for final assembly.

Hey Paul. The body has been fitted but not finally mounted. I have it off at the present for some additional trimming. I’ll just leave it alone for now. Thanks!
