    Gas-N Standard Pipes?

    This may not be accurate, but it appears that most people who go with Gas-N pipes choose the Touring (quieter) version. A complete guess based on what I read.

    For those of you with the Gas-N standard pipes, any regrets? Do you still like the sound and volume (two different things)? Mention your engine because that makes a difference.

    I know this is a completely subjective question, and I've seen the good video comparison of the standard vs touring pipes.

    I've owned both and currently have the touring pipes with a 500+HP 427. For me they are plenty loud, still require me to wear ear plugs. I did not want my wife to not like riding in the car and honestly if they were any louder it might be an issue.

    People definitely still hear you coming...

    I have the touring with a gen 3 Coyote and still plenty load and still sounds awesome. As FMan said still use ear plugs.

    I know you asked for feedback from those with standard pipes, and here you have a third touring pipes owner responding. But one more with zero regrets about the choice. At cruise, it's a very happy sounding burble. But definitely makes itself heard once you get into the throttle. They're the perfect answer in my mind. This is with a stroked SBF making 420ish fwhp.

    ya i agree. Gen 3 coupe with Levy 408 engine its still pretty loud. never installed the factory pipes just Gas N ones. at 65 in 5th the car is almost lugging but you can hold a conversation, just under shouting... but anything over 2k in revs forget about talking. for that i have 2 way headphones. Built my Coupe with "overkill" insulation.

    I started with the standard pipes and they were too loud for me, made the switch to the touring pipes, much better but still plenty loud. How did I make the switch, Gas-N/Georgie customer service is outstanding, I will leave it at that.

    Very helpful feedback guys, thanks. The touring seems like the way to go. I've got an LS3, so in terms of sound dynamics it's probably closer to the SBF than the Coyote. I've had some exhaust systems in the past that sounded great, but were hard to live with. I suspect that's the case with the FFR pipes and to some extent the GasN standard pipes.

    I know you are asking about Gas-N and I am not knocking them at all as it is obvious that many here love them. Another, less advertised, option are the Boig Quietpipes. I have them on my Coyote and love them. They sound great and there is no need for ear plugs while driving. They come in bare metal, so I had mine ceramic coated along with Drummer Mike's heat shields, which seems to have eliminated the risk of snake bites. Another plus, they fit perfect with no shims needed.

    So tonight I'm reading about headers and sidepipes, ceramic coatings, etc. My kit will be arriving in November so Im far from needing to decide on this, but this thread seemed like a good place to ask for some education (I have no experience in this area). Based on hearing about Gas-N in the build school, then researching them, talking with Georgie, and reading about them in the forum, I ordered my kit without headers and sidepipes, planning to puchase both from Gas-N. This is where I get confused. I was looking at the polished headers and pipes, then saw photos of the yellowing from heat, which I don't care for. So does this mean I buy unpolished headers and pipes from Gas-N and then have them coated by someone like Jet Hot with a high polish ceramic coating? Thanks in advance for helping me get educated in this arena.

    I bought the standard pipes from Georgie and had them drop shipped to my ceramic coater. I wanted them the same as the rest of the headers. I had blued the FFR stainless headers for the short time I ran them. I love the more mellow rumble than the pinging higher tone of FFR. I'm running near 600 hp and they were a game changer for me.

    I've used Gas-N pipes on all my builds. Highly recommended. I haven't used their touring version. But my buddy changed his to the touring version (SBF 306) and they're definitely just a bit quieter. A whole other subject, but you'll still need ear protection no matter what. Between road noise, wind noise, and the side pipe exhaust, regardless of brand or type, you need protection. The sound level will do damage over time. Don't let anyone tell you differently. As far as finishes, Georgie's polished stainless is second to none and what I've always used. In some cases, they will turn a light straw color right around the bend, but it can be restored with a product like Compound 302. For my Coyote builds, the discoloration is almost non-existent. The combustion is very controlled. Your LS might be similar. If you don't want polished SS, then something like ceramic coating might be the way to go. For the headers, there's not much you're going to be able to do to keep them looking new. Even with ceramic coating, they're going to discolor. I have unpolished and uncoated headers in my Coupe from Georgie. They're discolored a lot. But proves it's a driver. Ceramic coating supposedly helps them to run cooler. But hasn't been an issue for me.

    I'm guessing that this may vary by state. In California no, it's not illegal to drive with hearing protection (e.g., foam ear plugs). It is illegal to drive with headphones on or earbuds in both ears, so keep this in mind if thinking about using noise cancelling AirPods or similar for hearing protection. That said, I've used both AirPods as well as a Sena Tufftalk headset in the roadster, and never been hassled for it.

    I have Gas-N headers and the standard Gas-N side pipes. Yes, they are loud... painfully so without hearing protection. But I never drive without hearing protection so it's not much of an issue. I've never heard the touring pipes to be able to compare, but with hearing protection in I've never wished for the pipes to be quieter.

    With regard to coatings, there's a bit to unpack here. Stainless steel headers will definitely discolor. Stainless steel side pipes will discolor a bit at the bends but can easily be cleaned up as Edwardb says. Beware of the "high polish" coating that Jet Hot and others offer. It will definitely dull and discolor on headers, and will likely also dull and discolor over time on the bends of the side pipes, and it cannot be cleaned up. If going with Jet Hot, I would recommend their Extreme 2000 or Ultra Extreme 2500 for the headers. It's not a shiny finish but will hold up to the heat better over time. If you want polished side pipes, IMO you're better off getting polished pipes from Gas-N and just cleaning them up occasionally.

    I have a type 65 coupe, and went with the touring pipes with a gen 3 coyote. The exhaust note is pretty low, but the intensity is definitely high. My neighbors let me know that they can hear when I turn the car on inside their house (I asked). Inside the car, due the frequency, I don't mind the sound at all, and I could easily carry a conversation in the car. Due to the intensity, I'll be using hearing protection on anything but the shortest drives around town. My plan is to have actual glass windows, and seal the car up the best I can. Sound meters are pretty cheap, so I definitely recommend measuring it once you have it set up however you end up going about it. At 85db you have an 8 hour time limit, and that time gets cut in half every 3db higher.

    I got the 3" core, aggressive pipes from GasNPipes. Don't know what they sound like yet, but Georgie said they sound great.

    Just an FYI - my pipes were ordered in April from Gas-N and I still don't have them...I'm having them done in black and they keep telling me that the black ceramic is on back order, which is after they told me they were done, but they found a blemish and sent them back. This has been going on far too long with Georgie at Gas-N. Just a heads up on this company.

    Might be better to have it done locally if you have options like a jobber or Cerakote. A satin sheen is available from them.

    Huge thank you to everyone who weighed in on my question. Seems like GasN is still a great choice and that I would have the pipes shipped direct from them to the coater. I did speak with Georgie a few weeks ago and then started reading about coatings. That prompted me to put my questions out there to be sure I understood things correctly before I speak with him again.

    edwardb and JohnK... if I don't like the yellowing should I be going with the GasN high polish and just clean them up as neeeded and have the headers coated with a high temp ceramic high polish?

    I got the black ceramic coated touring side pipes from Georgie this past Spring. Took about 4 weeks to receive. From everything I've heard about Georgie and my experience with him buying my headers and pipes, he will make sure it's made right.

    Love my touring pipes. They do cost a bit of top end power, but sound great and don't hurt the ears. Can carry on a conversation in the car. Just what I was looking for.

    If you want the polished SS side pipe look, then yes. Get the headers coated if you want. I've had them both coated and not coated as I mentioned, In either case, at least in my experience, don't expect them to stay looking polished.

    love my touring pipes with my Gen3 Coyote, can actually have a conversation until you hit about 60 mph on the highway then it's just the wind noise...

    in comparison, a local owner has stock side pipes and we both were dyno'ed at the same place, he puts down 50 more RWHP than I do - same engine

    I asked my local constabulary (Pickens Co., GA) that question when he came to sign off my paperwork for a GA title application and I gave him an audition of the GAS-N Touring pipes on my BPE 347. He told me the 'short' answer is that it is illegal to wear headphones, earbuds, or earplugs in both ears while driving in the state of Georgia. This includes any type of device that covers both ears and blocks out sound from the environment around you. However, there was no proscription on hearing devices, such as hearing aids but after a few throttle blips, he said if I didn't use them, I was an idiot. I told him I was already half deaf from too much R&R playing in my music career and hearing aids are now a necessity. A set of Sony noise cancelling headphones works marvelously. And besides, with the exhaust port a few feet from your ears, you most likely couldn't hear warning road sounds anyway while underway. It would become a legal contest in a court if I were to cause an accident while wearing headphones. If no accident, well then, no harm, no foul.
