Long cruise
Moving to North Carolina from MD soon. Need to get the MKIV down there....and why trailer when you can drive? I've done a couple of 50-75 mile trips, but nothing this long, ~450 miles. Gas gauge flaky, but estimated I'd get 16mpg. Started out at 47 degrees, but not bad until hit West VA and fog, that's when I kicked in the seat heaters. Big wreck on 81 had an hour detour on crowded, slow, back roads. Filled up outside Roanoke. Good thing had a Boyd's tank and 22 gallons because I filled up 20. Think about 14mpg on that leg of about 290 miles. Next leg was smooth, didn't fill up, so don't know the mpg, but guessing 16. Sunny and got toasty even though around 75. Usually cruising with traffic around 70, couple of brief stints to 85 when needed to clear semis. Surprising how comfortable on a long drive.
Got "cruiser wave" from a group of bikers. VA state trooper had a set of pickups with trailers on the side of the road, probably for a breakdown - all heads turned as I went by. 911 pulled up next to me and I could barely see him through his tinted windows giving me thumbs up. Good drive and now in its new home, until I get my external garage built
