Engine Hose Replacement
Have my donor disassembled, and started work on the engine 'simplification'. Many of the myriad of hoses on the engine are fairly hard especially those running close to / under the manifold. Should these hoses be purchased from Subaru or simply make them up from bulk hose? Any good source for I suspect 'metric' hose sizes?

Depends. If you do the simplification stuff like removing the air pump, evap, pcv, and getting aftermarket fuel rails, then there are very few hoses left. Some of the oem hoses are supposed to be firm... esp the ones that deal with crankcase vapors, and they have bends in them that you can't match with bulk hose.

Here's a pretty thorough write up on hose replacement from NASIOC: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=2614458
Some others on here have some recommendations in their build threads.
I am in the same boat - I've eliminated quite a bit from my donor motor and am now in the midst of what seems like a graduate degree on hose replacement/install. I'm a Subie Newbie so that doesn't help either.

Again, thanks for the input. I may be getting too concerned as all the items you mentioned will be done.

Thanks for the reference. Just got lazy and did not think to search there! Bookmarked it!
