    A Simple Registration Question

    How do I go about getting a VIN number for my MK4 in Oregon?

    I am planning to call my DMV tomorrow, however, the last time I called the DMV I was given misinformation. Before I go down the wrong Route to obtaining a VIN I was hoping someone who had registered in Oregon could help me out.

    The title and registration process is pretty straightforward for a replica car according to Oregon.gov website , however, the VIN number is a hard stop in the On Line registration process. I cannot find on the Oregon.gov website how to obtain a VIN number.

    Thanks,

    Mark

    Mark,

    Looks like you need to start with a VIN inspection:

    https://www.oregon.gov/ODOT/DMV/page...nspection.aspx

    General Info
    A VIN inspection is a physical examination of your vehicle to verify the VIN on your vehicle matches the title or ownership document.

    You must get a VIN inspection for:
    Out-of-state or out-of-country titled vehicles;
    Vehicles being titled for the first time as totaled and assembled, reconstructed or replica;
    Vehicles being titled for an additional occurrence as totaled and assembled, reconstructed or replica;
    Any vehicle with a title surrendered under ORS 819.010, 819.012, 819.014 or 819.030 (including recovered stolen vehicles that are not totaled due to damage); or
    Oregon salvage-titled vehicles when applying for a regular Oregon title.
    You can have a VIN inspection done by:
    DMV;
    A licensed Oregon vehicle dealer, when the vehicle is in their stock; or
    Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (only if the vehicle must be tested for emissions).
    The VIN inspection fee is $7.00.

    You'll probably need this form as well:

    Thanks Dave, I was looking at that but for some reason thinking it was for cars that already had a VIN. I'll give it a shot!

    Looks very similar to Colorado's VIN process. First step is a VIN inspection. This is done at a State Patrol facility in Colorado. They run the chassis and engine serial numbers to check for stolen parts and check the car over to determine road worthiness. After that, you apply for a state issued VIN. Once the state approves the application, the State Patrol installs the state issued VIN plate and the car can then be titled and registered. The whole process took about a month in Colorado. Now I'm just waiting for my custom plates to arrive.
