Side pipe hangers - chicken or the egg?

Hello,

I'm about ready to put the body on (pre painting and body work) so I can do some go karting farther from home and get it trailered for painting and body work.

I have a Gen 3, ball flange headers from FFR, and GAS-N side pipes.

How do I align the side pipe hangers (where to drill on chassis) if I don't know where the body will be aligned in its final position? Or maybe I can support the side pipes some other way in the mean time with the body on?

You are correct that final alignment comes after the body is permanently located...BUT...you don't want to run without hangers so put them on and if they have to be relocated afterward it's just a matter of drilling one or two new holes. I have to reposition about 75% of them on the cars I paint.

I supported my sidepipes with some short ratchet straps secured to the door hinges to go-kart. Now my body is mounted and I installed the hangars yesterday.

Thank you both. I kind of don’t like the long bolts going through the 2”x2” and into the cabin. Are rinuts a good alternative? Are the bolts a better idea? If the hanger has to be repositioned, rivnuts make it more difficult?

A Rivnut does not have performance specs like a weld nut. Yeah, that complicates things.
I do not recommend a Rivnut for that load and vibration, it is similar to riveting.

Thank you, I did something very similar to support the side pipes. I was just wondering how to do it with the body on without installing the hangers as the body will not be in its final position.

I will go with Jeff’s recommendation.

I decided the FFR design was lacking in this area, so set about designing an adjustable bracket for in/out and Up/down.

Requires installing two 3/8" Rivnuts in the bottom surface of the 2" square tubing at the front of the cockpit floor.

Bracket is made from 1/8" thick 2" x 2" angle iron, 6" length needed for each. Re uses the hardware that came with the FFR kit.

Drawing attached, note the left side and right side are not the same part, they are a mirror image of each other.

** This is on a Mark 3.1 with FFR sidepipes; you may have to adjust the Rivnut position in/out from the drawing dimensions.
