4 Coupes and the Silver State Classic Race in Nevada

I just wanted to post this as the Silver State Classic Challenge is now 1 month away and we just had a fourth Type 65 enter, John from Virginia and his just completed type 65. He is driving it from Virginia and then to California after the race. What an amazing adventure for him.
Going to be a great event with four type 65's, but we need one more to form a team! Anyone?
This is a 90 mile one way event and we try and average as close to our chosen speed as possible. Looks like that will be 95mph, 135mph, 145mph and 150mph.

Too much is going on for me to make it this year. But if I bring my coupe out from Pittsburgh and am in town next year I could see myself racing.

This is the kind of leadership we are looking for! Good luck and be safe!

I hope to be able to make it next year.
    My Type 65 Coupe: Ordered May 27, 2021. Arrived November 19, 2021.

I am liking what I see for next year! Maybe 6 coupes for the race. Being in the Coupe family is an amazing experience as I have had the opportunity to meet some amazing people and make lifetime friends. Dave Tabor and I have become great friends and it's only because we have Type 65's, without them we probably would have never met.

Agreed, the cars are pretty cool but the people you meet are the best part.

The safety equipment requirements for beginners don't look too onerous and it looks like I'd mostly need a new helmet and clothing. The drive over from Salt Lake isn't bad if I can find the time to get the coupe out here. I'll try to make it happen next year.

Jacob, safety requirements for the touring group are easy in the coupe. Doesn't get too tough until the 180 group as they require a fuel cell and I am not going down that road so my max will always be 165.

Sounds good to me. I have a fuel cell but don't foresee myself ever going that fast. I would feel like Steve McQueen to just be participating.

Are you guys running oil coolers and fire suppression systems? Those are the last two mechanical items that I haven't gotten around to installing.

By the way if anyone is coming through Salt Lake City for the race and needs a hand, I'm an easy guy to find and feel free to reach out.

    Jacob,
I am running a fire suppression system but no oil cooler as I have never needed it on track or street. My oil temp did hit 240 in May at a sustained 160 mph and I am ok with that as oil coolers are just another failure point and if I don't need one I am not running one. Coyote holds 10qts of oil and stays cool for 99% of what I do.
Lewma, I am penciling you in for next year and looking forward to it.

240F is not a bad temperature for modern oils. If I was going to run an oil cooler it would have a thermostat installed set to 225F. I am not installing an oil cooler and will monitor the temperature. The ambient temperature does get over 100F quite often here. If the oil temps cannot be kept under 250F, then I will consider an oil cooler.
Even then, I would install lines to/from the oil pan with its own pump to/from the cooler.

    Skuzzy,
I like the oil cooler direct from oil pan sump idea. You could put a switch in and only use it when needed. Is this method common as I have never heard of it being used to cool the oil. But as I said, if my oil temp stays under 250 at 160mph I am not changing anything. Dave sees almost 300 in his 302 at sustained high speeds and he uses an oil cooler and just installed a larger one. Amazing how the coyote doesn't run high oil temps and maybe because it's 10 Qts

Cast iron block versus aluminum block? 10 qts does help. I think 7 qts is pretty much the standard for the Windsor blocks aftermarket pans. Still, if he is running an oil cooler and keeping sustained temperatures of 300F then that seems off. Then again it depends on where he is taking his oil temperatures.

At any rate, if I was going to go with a cooler using external pump and lines directly to/from the oil pan, I would use a thermostatic switch with an indicator on the dash. Make that two indicators. One says the pump is running, the other says the pump should be running but it isn't. In my car, I am putting an indicator bank below my sight line well within peripheral view. Anything red is bad.

I do not know if that oil cooler configuration is common, but it is one I have used in several cars. I know a couple of friends who also use it in their builds. I started doing for a few reasons. It takes a load off the engine oil pump. If it fails it is usually not a catastrophic failure. I can vary the pump speed for any given application.

Never thought of the iron vs aluminum block but you might be onto something.
Not sure where his oil temp is taken, but mine is in the pan.
I might go your oil cooler route if needed. Will find out in a few weeks.

Are you taking temp readings from the transmission and differential as well?

If so, what method are you using? Custom fill plugs?

No trains temp but the differential is being monitored and I used the factory gt350 diff cover which has a port for the temp probe.

If I get my butt in gear, I'll be there next year. It probably won't be painted though.

I will probably be in gel coat as well. I figure to log, at least, 2,000 miles before considering paint.

Alright, I'm pretty convinced I should do this. I have the same long block as Dave and will do my best to get the car to Salt Lake and get an oil cooler installed for next year. I have the 7 quart Ford Motorsports pan with the trap door system but am not comfortable that it won't overheat the oil. Good luck and please post a report and plenty of photos here!

    Jacob,

You need to do this. Dave hooked me in May 2023 and I cannot wait to do it again and again. It's like a crack addiction, at least that's what I have been told

I'll make my best efforts to be there. Honestly I need another "like a crack addiction" hobby like I need a hole in my head, but I don't have any strong reason not to participate.

Guys at the OTC in 2002 called it the "go-fast crack pipe" -- where you start doing track events and end up burning through money faster than if you burned it in piles on your driveway.

The race is this Sunday and three of the four coupes are on the way. I will be the one arriving later tomorrow.
I am sure we will post some results when we return.

    Race Complete!
All four Coupes took home awards. Snowman took home first place in his division, Dave took home 2nd in his and John took 3rd in his division and did it as a rookie.
I won an award at the car show. We had a great time and meeting John and his wife was amazing. My car hit a confirmed 165.7 MPH and I realized i need some toe in as the car was a handful as it wanted to move around or tramline a lot do to road conditions. I need some toe in for high speed stability instead of no toe for track and autocross. It cruised at 162-164 for a few miles with no issues. Coolant temp 195, oil temp 240 and differential temp of 280 degrees.
I data logged the entire run and can tell you it takes appx 235 HP to sustain 160 MPH. 5th gear 6200 rpm and 6th at 5000rpm's.

Well done and congratulations to everyone. I will start making plans to have my car in Salt Lake and ready for next year.

By the way I love the "burning money" decals on Dave's post #25 but I'd say the denominations are wrong!

Dmac800, I think they held up but I still have some oil or grease in the CV/Diff area and not sure what are where yet. It rained heavy on the way home and the mess is making it hard to pinpoint the location.

I read ready on the forum a long time ago that they put plastic tie straps in the grooves to stop the expansion, but I don't remember the results. Just a thought.

    compilation video

Here is a link to my event compilation video:

    https://youtu.be/5fA-BH__2KE

This was my 5th event, having run 100, 110, 120 and 130 groups previously.

I ran solo in the 135 mph group (target average for 90 miles).
Top speed was 152 mph - the car cannot go any faster.
My time variance was ~0.6 secs which was good enough for 2nd place.

Dave, You ran the one mile with air dam & wing but not the time/speed event.
The downforce is not a benefit? Does the car run higher speed with the air dam?
Are trip computers allowed? Watch calculations only?

    Hi Jim,

I wanted to run the rally without the wing this time to see if I could pick up some top end speed - nope - same 152 mph. I did use the air dam/nose last time and this time.

The car is stable with and without the wing, but I'd rather run the wing - the car does feel more stable with it but it's not like a curvy track where the wing can get the car to understeer - the rally curves are not driven at the limit like on a track.

You can enter the 'hand timing' category like I did, using tables, stopwatch and speedometer - or run whatever computerized system you like - there are two categories of entries. There are some cars that run some custom computer systems or phone apps using GPS.

Big Shooter we are looking forward to having you. May and September.
I will be uploading a video soon to my Youtube channel "Cobra Daytona Build" with all the specific challenges of sustained high speed driving and how the car holds up.
I data logged the entire run and have a lot of data such as required HP and torque at different speed and things I have needed to change.
