    Scott's 2nd 289 Build

    Starting my 2nd 289 build...a little different this time.
    289 engine
    Dayton wire wheels

    Well, I'll be really interested in the rear exhaust, if that's a fair description.
    I started a 289 USRRC-style with BP347. Just at the early stages, but I'll
    be looking at the completion of the IRS portion of the car to further assess
    the feasibility. (That first 289 looks exceptional!)

    I also plan a rear exhaust, interested in your ideas for the exhaust routing. I’m running a shortened 3 link.

    Coupe-R has a Ford Performance 363 mated to a TKX, 18084.
    Many details on my Coupe-R are different from a typical Coupe build because mine is not street legal, race only.

    289 has a BP 302 mated to a TKX 18084.

    I'm building a 289 car too. I've got the narrowed 3 link with pin drive 15" FIA wheels. Can't wait to see what you come up with.

    A few quick questions Mike... I know the solid rear axle width should be 54.25" for pin drive wheels. What points did you take this measurement from?

    For example, did you take the measurement from axle flange to axle flange? BEFORE the installation of the brake rotors and pin drive adapters...

    Or did you take the measurement from the face pin drive adapter to pin drive adapter? AFTER the installation of the brake rotors and pin drive adapters...

    I am building a roadster and am planning an undercar exhaust system. I have Speedway Motors "block hugger" headers and am going to run 2 1/4" exhaust. I plan to put 3" sleeves in the rear 4" tube connecting the two frame tubes and running the exhaust through the sleeves like the old Corvettes.

    I was able to buy the narrowed rear end from Factory Five, it's the solid axel from Moser, I believe it's narrowed 2.5" per side. My kit also came with the narrowed front suspension. I bought the wheels from Vintage Wheels US. Luckily I didn't have to measure or customize anything, I'm not that good of a mechanic.

    As for the exhaust, my engine is a roller cam 302. I am using the BBK shorty headers turned around backwards. I plan to have a muffler shop use either 2 or 2 1/4" inch pipe down from the headers to a Dyno Max turbo muffler mounted under the seat area and exit out before the rear wheel.

    I have the shortened rear 3 link from Moser, it’s 54.25 from axle flange to axle flange.

    OK...here we go. Thoughts? Wire wheels on my 289 build. I bought 1 wheel to test the fit and photoshopped it on the back. It had to be a 16" rim to clear my brakes....so 16x8 in front and 16x9 in back...

    Since I had only one wheel, this was created by combining a photo of the front with the wheel on and a photo of the rear with the wheel on. You can see the seam in the picture in the middle where the 2 photos were blended... I think I need more tire in the rear...

    Love it. It's the closest we'll get to the real deal so why not. Besides, these cars have been done so many ways....What do you think? Who makes em? If I were to do this, and I was thinking about it, I would have gone with a narrow tire to get a rounder profile. A squared up sidewall can look too modern in my opinion and takes away from the nostalgic look.

    Hadn't thought about a narrower tire!

    With 16" Wheels...the tire options are limited. I also want more tire in the back to fill it out...so this is what I am thinking. These are Dayton wire wheels...beautiful wheels.

    Front: 235/55R16 which is 26.1" tall and 9.3" wide on a 16x8 with 5" backspace (this is what is in the photo above - front and rear) This is the same overall size as the 235/60R15 Factory Five recommends.

    Rear: 235/60R16 which is 27.1" tall and 9.4" wide on a 16x8 with 4.5" backspace. I can't find an acceptable tire that is wide enough (and tall enough to fill out the wheel well) for a 9" wheel. Since I am making a "gentleman's Cobra" I do not need all the tire in the rear. In comparison, CSX7073 has Avon tires measuring 215/70R15 up front and 245/60R15 out back...so I am OK with my sizing.
