    Side pipe painting

After almost 20 years and 18,000 miles, it is time to repaint the side pipes on FFR#4247K. The silver barbeque paint has held up really well, but I am thinking of changing to flat black. Do you think I need to totally remove the old paint first, or can I get away with a quick roughing up with sand paper? If I mask everything well, can I get away without removing the pipes?

If the paint is intact you should be able to scuff and shoot. As long as you're satisfied that you can reach the backside they can be done on the car.

I agree. You might want to put the car on stands so you can slide under the car and spray outward at the bottom. OTOH, from any normal lookers perspective, you can spray everything they can see very easily. I taped the body paint around where the pipes come through from inside very carefully. But the rest got some pieces of cardboard boxes taped to the body behind the pipes. There were even a couple of quick touchups done where I just held the cardboard in position w/ one hand and sprayed w/ the other.

Rustoleum has a beautiful matte black premium grill paint that is really easy to keep clean compared to the flat black. I used it until I built new pipes and ceramic coated them black matte.
