    Stock Exhaust Questions

    I've looked through the forums for previous questions regarding the stock exhaust and I have and have found a couple (namely edwardb's here from March 2021 and House Money's here from May 2020).

    The main question that I had that these addressed is the location of the hangers. The manual shows one on each side of the muffler and then an additional one on the last section. I, like the original posters, only received 4. There were various solutions and people seemed to put them in different locations, as well as using self-made and store-bought hangers.

    What I'm wondering is:
    1. It appears the consensus is to put a hanger either in front of, or behind, the muffler and use the other for the rear section. Has anyone recently tackled this recently that can provide support or anyone that has had theirs for a while tell how it has worked out?
    2. It appears that if I mount a hanger in the "front of the muffler" location, the 1/4"-20 x 1.50" Bolt (Item #26199) is going to protrude from the floor with the nylon lock nut on it. Does this later require that the transmission tunnel be modified to still sit flat?
    3. One post mentioned additional clamps and hangers in other boxes, can anyone confirm this? I couldn't find any and I have a newer kit if that matters.
    4. Has anyone successfully used the side exit pipes? I read in a different post that it caused ground clearance issues. I don't have running boards or fenders.

    I did the side exhaust through the cab on the extended cab truck. I will take some pictures of it when I get home tonight. This was a complete home fabrication job. I purchased: hangers, mufflers (More info on my my choice with the pictures) Some straight 2.5 inch, 90degree 2.5 inch and oval exhaust tips. OK, I'll spill the beans, I was going to make a separate post on this, but here goes: I wanted electric cutouts. So the mufflers were relocated under the bed. I used (Same end) mufflers to turn the exhaust back toward the cab. I also inserted an "H" pipe just behind the transmission. As with any mod, come other mods. I had to find a location for the e-brake bracket because the "H" pipe is where that should have been according to the assembly manual. I ended up moving the bracket rearward to the very back of the cab and secured it into the last horizontal square tube. This required me to make an extension from the e-brake handle to the bracket, which I did with 3/8 stainless rod.

    Muffler.jpg The cutouts are on the flanged end of the muffler and then the straight through dumps down just in front of the rear diff. The switch for this will be on the back side of the center console.

    Then 90 degree turned to exit. There is about 3 inches of space between the frame rails under the bottom cab floor and the bottom side tube of the chassis, this is where all the 2.5 inch exhaust happens, so NO there is no clearance issue. As a bonus, the heat from the mufflers is nut under the cab. I still need to make a heat shield for the battery, but as is the battery is a good 8 inches away from the top of the mufflers. I'll post it and give you a link to the thread.

    I wound up not using any of the supplied hangers, they just didn't work for me. Right now I have only 1 hanger on each side and it's the one at the rear of the cab. I'm not totally happy with just one but I'll wait until later to fabricate something else.

    I installed my exhaust last month and had the same challenge. My kit is recent (delivered July 19th) and I only received four hangers for the exhaust. The inventory list list didn't include the rear exhaust hangers although they were mentioned in the instructions. I mounted the hangers in front of and behind the muffler as indicated in the isntructions. The exhaust is very rigid so the clamp to the rear section is holding the tips up fine. That said, I haven't driven it yet so I don't know if it'll sag over time with real world driving and I'd prefer a hanger on the back section. I'm planning to revisit once I get it on the road.

    Regarding the bolt head for the exhaust hangers in the cockpit, it's not interfering with the trans tunnel. It's close but it doesn't hinder the tunnel from laying flat. I'm not real happy with the proximity of the passenger-side mount to the parking brake mount, so I may still move the hanger to create better clearance.

    The other exhaust item that wasn't called out in the instruction is the placement of the spacers. I required the spacers on the downpipes to create the proper clearance between the mufflers and the floor, but it didn't require the single square spacer. The instructions did not indicate that spacer nor which side it is meant for.

    From what I can tell, things like the exhaust (collectors on back) the drive shaft kit, etc. are pretty standard regardless of the engine, trans rear end combo you have. When I talked to the Tech guys at FFR, I was told I didn't need the drive shaft spacer with my Moser rear end, but it is included in every kit. Same for some of the spacers. Depending on the headers you buy, you may need it. I needed the square spacer on the passenger side to make both sides equal on back to my H Pipe.

    Here's what I did at the rear of the cab.

    I bought the long hanger. Then I removed one of the bolts on the split clamp and replaced it with the hanger. This worked fine on the left side.

    But on the right side the clamp was too far forward. So I went back and installed the spacer, which moved the whole exhaust back so I could use the long hanger in place of the split clamp bolt.

    Keep in mind that I have a SBF with BBK shorty headers.

    The reason I did not use the other supplied hangers is that I could not get them to line up with the frame. But I might take another look at that later.

    These and many more are available on Amazon, cheap and quick. Because I moved my mufflers under the bed. I installed these longer hangers and hung them from the diagonal bed support tubes.

    This is great to know. I've been holding off drilling into the frame and through the floor if this wasn't going to work!

    I have a SBF with BBK shorty headers like Don so I'm using the square spacer. I tried referencing this drawing on page 223 of the manual. If you look closely, the spacer is in the drawing on, what appears to be, the passenger side (which I believe lines up with what Guardm16 & Don both said).

    Thanks Guardm16 for the image of alternate hangers, I'll probably invest in some of those. I like how Don worked them into the split clamp.
