Powder coat FFR Halibrand wheels

For those of you that changed the color of your FFR Halibrand wheels, what process did you use? And do you mind saying how much you paid?

I'm looking to black out my wheels, and I've gotten 3 different responses from local powder coating outfits. One will charge $125 per wheel, the second is charging $100 for sandblasting and $100 for powder coating ($200 total per wheel), and the third said they wouldn't do it because it wouldn't turn out good and they did not recommend sand blasting because it would take too much material off the surface.

Also, has anyone gone the painted route or the ceramic coated route?

Bonus question: If you went with black, was it gloss, semi-gloss, or matte?

And just so I'm correct, the FFR wheels are aluminum and come painted (not powder coated).

I had mine powder coated gloss black. A friend of mine has a body shop. and works with a place that does wheel repair. He powder coated all 4 wheels in gloss black for $500. The body shop then painted the center pieces that cover the lug nuts in a matching gloss black (wheel shop said that painting those would be better than PC).

I just did mine. Sandblasted them and picked up a junker oven at the local trash/transfer station. I did them in matte black. I got quotes between $600-800 for all 4 and doing them myself prolly cost me shy of $200.

$600-$800 is in the same ballpark as everyone I talked to in Minnesota. I had mine done in the middle of that range. Wheels plus center caps and spinners. I did a semi-gloss



The coater was very careful not to coat the actual threads of the spinner or center piece.

Have you considered having them painted? A local KC shop paints wheels for most of the high-end exotics here in town. I've used him for a few pairs of wheels. He's painted them gloss black, and they look great, and in my experience, they've held up just as good as powdercoat. He charged $600 to paint them, and that included unmounting the tires, and remount/balance.

I guess the responses I got back from the local powder coaters isn't out of line.

I have considered having them painted. I guess the good thing about going that route is I could touch them up myself in the future if needed.
