Great day in the garage (Quickjacks and paint)

I had an excellent garage day today I just wanted to share with y'all. A few weeks ago I got wind of Quickjacks. One video had a fella speaking to the great deal he got because they were an open box. Something around $1200 I believe. I recently sold a motorcycle, so from that windfall I hit up their website and scored a 5000lb kit for $1150 shipped. The convenient part was the "open box" aspect meant it was already used so all the fittings were already installed. A few quarts of ATF, some fancy acrobatics to bleed the air and bam!

I also wanted to play around with some old paint I had lying around. It's House of Kolor. I was going to use it to paint a Harley I used to have. That was 5 years (and 4 bikes) ago. Since I'll be painting my Cobra I just waned to play around with some scrap aluminum. No sanding or primering, I just wanted to practice laying down layers from base to clear. This color actually has a midcoat that you add the green pearl. I followed the TDS's to a tee and I think it came out nicely:

The hilarious part is I used that $15 Harbor Freight purple HVLP gun for all of it.

It's hard to beat HoK for WOW looking paint. I selected their Cobalt Blue candy applied over their Orion Silver and it's amazing. Our painter screwed it up by mixing brands and had to start over. Then got the bright idea to try and match the HoK we had with another brand. Almost 6 weeks later he admitted defeat and went back to HoK. To my there are colors, there are candies, and then there is HoK.

Lessons learned, if you go with HoK use everything from them, don't try to apply it over another brand. And do as they recommend, don't be a cowboy. They have a great tech guy that knows his stuff and is always willing to help. I've sent him text messages on Saturday night and gotten a reply.

I like the green - it's different. I bought these when I did my last car and sprayed everything from chassis black to Zolotone in the trunk. I am by no means a painter on the best of days but they worked well for what I needed.

I've got my eye on an LVLP style gun for the base and clear, and my plan for the primer was to drill out my HF purple gun with a 5/64" drill bit to make it 2mm. I'm planning on using Slick Sand, which I've heard is like spraying pancake batter.

I use the 5000# quick jacks in combination with a set of home-built wood wheel stands, I don't know how you can do without both.

Jack it up with the quick jacks, slide the wheel stands under the tires, lower the quick jacks and slide themquick jacks wheel stands Y0L0.jpg out between the wheel stands.

Now you can work under the car on a creeper with plenty of "elbow room"
