Grill Mounting Angle

For builds that don't have a hood or sides, is the angle at which you mount the grill variable or is it supposed to be mounted such that the supports rest on the arms? I'm working on my coolant hoses and want to make sure I cut them to the correct lengths. I would also like to have my grill not be at such a sharp angle.

The tabs do not rest on the suspension arms (i.e., the pic is 2D) as the arm of the suspension moves up and down. You can set the radiator to any angle you want. The tab is to mount the headlight to since you won't have fenders.

The most common grill angle is one that parallels the front door to body angle, around 35 degrees. There is a lot of angle adjustment available, but whatever you feel looks the best is the correct angle for you. I believe the original 1933/34 grill sat much more upright that any of these F5 hot rods do.

Well said to mkassab and DanQ. One thing to keep in mind the lower radiator hose inlet changes angle also as you lean the radiator back. You can easily get to the point where you will have to raise the entire radiator in the mount at the upper control arm.

If you don't raise the entire assembly you will not get the lower hose on. There is a steel support plate for the lower suspension in the way.

The grill angle is determined by these two bolts with the slots in the grill mount. The tab that extends out over the suspension does not move regardless of the grill angle.

On my build, if I had adjusted the grill to be more upright the lower portion of the radiator hits a cross bar on the frame. Where I have my radiator set right now, I have maybe 3/8 inch of clearance at this point. The amount of clearance might also be affected by having an A/C Condenser.

As you can see I had to alter my X brace to fit the large oil pan. This does not alter the hose location.

I am fabricating a skid plate from Stainless to protect the lower hose from road debris. I will post pictures when done.
