    Gen 3 Coyote automatic vs manual - difference just in the flywheel or more?

    Hi everyone,

    Quick question - gen 3 Coyote comes configured for either automatic or manual transmission. I've read that the difference may just be in the flywheel, which I may end up replacing anyhow. Is that correct?

    If so, it helps with my search. It's been challenging finding a pull-out engine that I'm enthusiastic about purchasing, but until now I've been limiting the search to engines coming from Mustangs with stick shift. If the only difference is in flywheel, then it really doesn't matter which I get and I just need to commit to replacing the flywheel.

    Even if you find a manual shift takeout, for a Gen 3 Coyote you're going to be replacing the flywheel and clutch anyway. Ford introduced a dual disk clutch setup on the Gen 3. Which isn't compatible with the usual Tremec transmissions. Looks like the picture linked below. The pilot bearing isn't in the end of the crankshaft so the standard input shaft doesn't work. All comes off and you install a new flywheel and pilot bearing.

    Thanks. So just to be 100% certain I'm understanding, you, you're saying you agree with my assessment that it doesn't matter if I pull it from an automatic or manual because the only difference on the engine is the flywheel and I'm changing that anyway? Thanks!

    Correct. As far as the flywheel on a stock manual shift Gen3, you will have to replace it. So whether flexplate (automatic) or flywheel (manual) either would have to be replaced. Full disclosure: I've done two Coyote builds. A Gen2 and a Gen3. Both were crate motors and sold by Ford Performance as manual shift versions. Other than the flex plate, I'm 99% certain there are no other differences in the Coyote whether automatic or manual. But I can't cite personal experience. Happy hunting.

    The engines would be the same. The ECU's would be programmed slightly different
    Mrk III, 331 stroker, Borla stack injection, T5, 3:55 IRS, Power steering and brakes. Kleiner body & paint

    I bought a whole low-mileage wrecked Mustang of Copart. Kept what I needed, and parted out the rest. Final cost of the engine and transmission was about $2K. Took some work.

    I believe the real difference is in the control pack? They are definitely segregated as far as automatic or manual as I understand it. So if you were to buy a take out with all the electronics I am thinking you would need to acquire a manual control pack if you were going that direction.
