Expert advice needed: Powder coating material cost/volume

Roadster build….If you plan to powder coat both sides of all your aluminum panels…..how much “powder” and prep material is needed? I have a friend/of a friend who is a retired professional Powder Coater (still has all the equipment) and is willing to do all my parts as long as I cover the cost of material…I do not know how to respond to that???? (Except for a big thank you)

Powder is pretty cheap. Usually about $10-15 per pound. I like Prismatic Powders, personally.

While I haven't done my coupe panels yet, I will be coating them myself. I'm anticipating I'll need around 8-12 lbs. More if wanting a 2nd coat, obviously .

Should be similar for the Roadster.

Prep involves cleaning/degreasing the panels, then either etching by blasting or with chemicals. Then a final cleaning. So it's depend on what your friend's method is.

The cost of the powder is much cheaper than having it professionally done. I pay about $12 a lb for powder. I paid about $600 to have many of my panels coated.

8-12 pounds! That's nutty! I used Prismatic on mine, and my powdercoater covered every one of my panels front and back. He had plenty of that single pound left over. It was an $18 bag.

Haha, I might be overestimating! I've only powder coated small parts so far, so I was extrapolating

I paid a local powder coater $1,000 to coat only the panels that would be seen in and around the engine bay.
So Henry and I bought a 2' x 2' x 5' powder coating oven. There are SO many smaller parts that we would pay to have coated that this should pay for itself within the first year.

I picked up a used pizza oven that is 5' x 3' with about 16" tall opening. It's 240 volt but works fine with my Eastwood powder coat gun and materials. The oven came on a stand but the whole thing must weigh about 500 pounds as it is lined with some type of oven brick. I got it for free just to remove it from the site.
