Speedhut gauges glitching a little
Anyone had any weird issues with their Speedhut speedo and tach acting weird?
The other day I was doing some work on my dash, then upon the next drive I noticed my tach was reading way off. A quick reprogram later and it's back to calibrated. The weirdness was that the calibration setting didn't change. I moved it up and down a couple, but I ended leaving it on the one it was already.
Then today my speedo just decided I wasn't in the US anymore and jumped up a few dozen MPH. Or more accurately, started reading in KPH. After I got fuel and restarted it was back to MPH, but weird...

When you start your car, turn your key to on, pause till you see the gauges sweep back & forth, then start the engine. That should solve that

Ok, thanks. I may have unconsciously been doing that but now I'll be certain to.

My GPS speedo has always been perfect but I always turn on the ignition and wait a couple of seconds to let the ECU boot up like Rich says.
My tach on the other and has been nothing but problems. The needle gets off and I have to reset it. Even when reset to zero it's not accurate, I end up using my EFI panel for the engine RPM.

Mike, that is weird, I have never had a tach issue.

It's a strange one. I unscrew the bezel and manually set the needle to "0" and it's fine for awhile but then will drift off again. TBH it's not a huge deal as I can barely see it behind the steering wheel, it's easier to glance at the ECU screen. It's digital anyway.

I had a tach issue also; before I even completed the build the tach inside was moving so much that it completely went around. Called speedhut; they were great to deal with. Ended up sending it back to them, I believe they replaced the unit. It's been working great so far; cross my fingers. No issues with the speedometer but the oil pressure is alitte jittery till it warms up for some reason.

Just to be clear about my issue, the speedo changed mid-flight. I specifically remember checking my speed in a 45 zone (it said 50), then about a mile later when I went thru an intersection and turned right into another 45 zone it said 90! No powering down, just a right turn after a stop.

Mike, when your tach is off can you physically see that it needs a reset to zero?
I ask because ever since my first tach glitch I've had a gut feeling it's not reading right anymore. Maybe a few hundred RPM off.

For those with Speedhut gauges, I have found their warranty support to be fantastic. No issues, even though 9,000 miles away.

If the speedo is off, I would ask for repair. For the tach, I installed the filter the provided free of charge and that eliminated my Tach issues.
Try disconnecting the button and see if the push button is glitching with vibration.

At rest the needle would not be pointing to 0 on the dial. Sometimes it would be plus and sometimes it would be minus and the reading would be off by the amount it was off. I've reset it a few times but the issue persists.

That sounds like a loose needle, you got quit burying your tach

There's a filter for the tach?
Button isn't connected, unless I'm setting the calibration.

Thanks Mike. Even though it's my tach I'm sure the mechanics are the same.
The speedo is rock solid (even though it just randomly went to KPH from MPH). I can confirm that with a GPS speedo from my cell phone.
The Tach, on the other hand... I've only got one source for an RPM signal and it's the Speedhut gauge. I've got one of those RPM counter handheld things where you put a reflecting piece of tape on something and it reads how many times the piece of tape passes the beam. I used it on my HVAC air handler when I was testing RPM speeds. Now where is that silly thing...

You have to call them for the filter, not sure it is on the web site.

I got it solved. Apparently when I was trimming the dash I accidentally ended up loosening the Chrome bezel around tack, which made the dial inside rotate a little bit. I just removed it from the dash and learned that the bezel can actually be removed (thank you Mike), and that dial can be rotated to the 0 point of the needle.
I also confirmed it's accuracy with my remote tachometer laser reader thingy. I put a little piece of reflective tape on the balancer and it told me the RPM, which was indisputably close to what the tach said.
Mph still a question though, I emailed Speed Hut

I had some tach issues when i first built my car. Speed Hut even sent me a new tach and filter,, no help. A different brand tach worked fine and I even monitored the input with an oscilloscope. Signal was clean. I finally ran a new tach wire outside the Ron Francis harness and it solved the problem.
Also, if you hold the back of the the tach you can turn the chrome bezel, which moves the face in relation to the needle. If it's too loose it can move around, changing the reading.

Edit: I suppose you could have the same issue with a speedometer face also..

Eh, I don't think that speedo issue was the same. It literally shifted during a drive, then came right back to normal after a restart.
Speedhut wrote me back and gave me a few things to inspect if it ever happens again. They said the MPH/KPH transition is hard coded into the speedo and he was really puzzled how it was even possible.
That being said, I'm not 100% sure that's what happened. I looked down, saw 90ish, I was going 45ish, so I just figured that's what happened. It would have been nice if I remembered to check again at lower speeds to see if the same logic made sense but I didn't.
