All in costs for my completed MK IV

    Here is the promised breakdown of the major assembly parts used and costs;

    Kit Invoice from FFR=$24,736.
    OPTIONS:

    Body cut out
    Carbon Fiber Dash
    Wind Wings
    Trunk gas rods
    Over-Rider kit-Oil Coller kit
    Front sawy bar kit
    Seat track kit
    Diamond Stiched Door panel kit
    Diamond Stiched Leather seats
    Assembled side louvers

    ENGINE:$8,843
1969 Ford 351W Block machined and bored .060 oversize $500

    Summit Racing engine parts $5993

    DRIVE LINE: $9,876

    CVF Pully/Altinator kit $462
Classic Instruments Moal Bomber Style Gauges $1326
    Electronic Power Steering Kit $835
    Willwood Front Brake kit $1807
    Willood Rear Brake kit $1321

The above listed costs are just the large ticket items. There are too many expences under $500 to list here. However I did add up all my reciepts. To say the least I was shocked! Knowing the kit cost, and a rough idea of the engine parts costs I was thinking someing in the mid to upper 50's. HAH! Silly me.
Total reciepts come to an all in cost of $72,171 not including DMV costs of $239..
I estimate 1500 hours of labor over 10 months at 6 hours a day, 6 days a week.

The only used part on the car is the "shifter". Everything else was bought new or hand made. This is the cost of being a perfectionist. Its who I am! I'll never get out of it what I put into it, but that was never my intention. I just wanted to build the best Cobra Roadster I could.

$1620 for chrome plating the roll bars? Wow! I also have a Breeze bar, only one, and I paid a little over $400 to have it and four quick jacks show chrome plated which I thought was high.

Yea. Thats Oregon. The Oregon EPA shut down all of the plating shops in the state. Washington and California did the same. The few shops that market the plating do all the polishing then send it to Utah & back via truck. Sucks but thats the only game in town localy. The price listed also included the chroming for the Louvers which had a minimum cost per piece of $200. The guy had three templates. If your part fit in the smaller one you got the best price. The louvers fit in the middle one.
The up-side is that the plating is top show quality and is flawless.

That's pretty good. I figure I'll have around $80k in mine after I get it painted. You did well!

Well, this confirms my decision (FINANCIALLY ONLY). I have built a few cars and a lot of motorcycles and always wanted to build a kit Cobra. To me, building it is the most rewarding aspect. The joy is in the journey of building it..making it what YOU want, overcoming challenges, bringing it to life. And when it's done, there's a LOT more satisfaction in driving it. My problem was money. I estimated the cost and, realistically, I was around 75 to 80 K. The second problem (and this is just me) was paint and bodywork. The bodywork didn't look "fun" like the rest of the build, and paint cost is astronomical compared to when I was a kid. So I started to look at already-completed cars for sale. I looked at a bunch, knowing that "all comes to he who waits". In the end, I found just what I was looking for, complete with a 427W and a hardtop and even in the color of my choice for a little less than 60% of my estimate. Of course, where most guys can be proud of their accomplishment, I can't. And if I'm somewhere and am asked if I built it (a common question) I have to say no. But if I went the build-your-own route I would still be saving up money.

Hey Mike - mind sharing who did the plating for you? (and how long ago was it?) I'll have 2 roll bars and the quick jacks (maybe some other items) to do eventually (And I'm not above shipping them....)

I seriouly concidered the same route you took, but because I have built several other classic/muscle cars I know I would have blown it up and re-built it my way, thus not saving anything. After I sold a Thunderbolt Clone I built, I was looking for a 69 Mach 1. The only thing I could find in my budget would require a lot more work and cash to bring it to my standards. My good friend asked me why not build a car you want and have a "new" car for the same price as a "used" classic that you would just blow up and re-build anyway.
