    Value of power steering

I am new to this car bulding thing as will probably be obvious by my questions but...

I chose to NOT get the power steering option. My thinking was that a light car will be fine without it. I would really appreciate it if some one with wisdom would comment on this. Does anyone without PS wish they had it? Can it be retrofitted post initial build if desired?

    Thanks,

    Ray

IMO the electric P/S is a no brainer. Yes you can drive the car without it. But it makes the driving so much better. I would never build one without it unless it was a pure racecar. You could retrofit but it makes better sense to do it from the getgo IMO.

I second the above. You won't regret it, believe me.

Do you know of a good electric P/S setup for the 818?

I built a 33 with P/S and am building a 818 now. The 818 is a differant animal. I don't see the need for P/S due to the light weight and smaller tires IMO. You would have to modify the electra steer to the 818 kit yourself. No one is offering one as yet. It is doable but not worth the cost or bother to me.

I thought the same as you, (I drove armstrong steering cars for many years) until I tried to manuever those 245/40/17 tires. The issue us not the weight of the car, but the force required to turn those tires. I just installed the power steering last week, after almost 2000 miles without it. It is worth it, I bought the unit directly from Powersource ( Summit Racing) at a very good price. I installed a switch so I can turn off the assist when I want to.

All excellent advice! Thanks! It looks like I am in the market for a PS unit.
