Based on what I've read here (and there) over the last 13 years, I assume the seams still need attention so I started on what I thought I had to do. I used a flap wheel to knock down the seams until I was through the gelcoat. I kept at it until all the air holes were gone, which left a concave divot the length of the seam and about 2" wide. So far I've only done the front half, so stop me if I'm screwing up.
