Carb - dominator vs 4150 style

I'm currently doing some research on dominator vs 4150 style carbs (Assume similar cfms - 1050) to make a decision between them.

I've never used a dominator before, but what my research is showing is that the 4150 will have a much better throttle, especially w/ street driving, whereas the dominator will make another 15-20hp on the dyno. Does this seem accurate? DOes anybody have any experiences swapping between the two?

More options available with the conventional 4150 - not only in manifold choice but in CFM.

The Dominator was originally created to build a carb that exceeded 1000 CFM and had no Choke provision etc.. The 4150 has evolved further and primarily in the booster venturi area and has exceeded 1000 CFM as well.

    I'd chose a 4150..

Have you ever heard about problems with venturi area when exceeding 1000cfm? I believe the biggest 4150 style is 1050 cfm.......I was reading (and again we all know how reliable internet is, hehe) about how one person felt that over 1000cfm the 4150 has problems, chiefly causing some plugs to run rich, others lean, and that hte solution was either a dominator or to downsize to around 900cfm where the venturi area wouldn't be a problem.

It's always hard to learn valid info about carbs because there's a lot of good, and bad, stuff out there. Like one thread somebody spent pages arguing why dyno tuning was a complete waste of time, lol.

Sorry Alex - I've not ever heard of that problem..... I think it might have more to do with the scoop or air cleaner than the carb. It might also be the design of the intake manifold.. You will find that some intake designs work better with stagger jetting to fatten up those cylinders that are further away from the center of the plenum.. But those seem to be mostly applicable to old single plane intakes that were used on big block Chevrolet engines.

With a bigger carb you lose signal that is throttle response at different rpms. It is one reason why given 2 carbs we always go smaller for street cars or any type of road racing. That said we have had more people going larger and larger lately for that extenze feeling!

I was doing a bit of research from what a friend told me and it looks like a Pro-Systems SV1 might be the way to go - 1/2'' shorter than a 4150, same responsivness of the 4150, and dominator style flow. Responses on various forums (e.g., Chevelles) seems to be very positive regarding it.

Looks like it combines the best of both worlds

And being a "1 barrel" (lol) means it either idles or GOES! That's my style, heh
