Pops out of 5th gear
Got the tranny out. Local guy wants $ 1,000.00 to replace 5th gear and 5th gear syncro. I’m going to hack at it myself. I called Ralligear to see what they had in stock and they never called me back.
Where can I buy the gears I need to be back on the road?

Have them throw in an LSD while they are in there.

You can buy the parts online at places like Subaru Parts Online. Replacing 5th gear and its syncro is not hard. I actually did it once in the car without removing the trans Although I would not recommend doing it that way.

I guess I can’t pass the IQ test. I can’t find the gear or the syncro on the site you mention. Anybody have another source for my gears?

You can also try this site. opposedforces, it may be easier to read. Once you get the part number you can search on-line for the best price / availability.
for ex: a 5th gear assembly (two gears) for a 2007 WRX 5MT is part number: 32315AA420

What goes bad with gear or syncro that would cause it to pop out of gear?

Bob is right, usually its a bent shift fork or a linkage issue that causes a trans to pop out of gear. Best to take it apart first and then determine what needs replacing.

I have been searching for a while regarding this same problem, and I finally found a detailed and specific explanation about what may cause this. The article states that the 35 mm lock nut on the end of the transmission main shift may be loose or improperly torqued. Has anyone checked for this issue? I may pull my trans to check, as I have started to have this same issue.

While looking at the very helpful suggestions to my problem of diminished boost, I saw my old problem here that my car was popping out of 5th gear occasionally. I never added the solution to the thread. There is a little brake pad thingy on the tips of the fork. The metal clip that holds the pad onto the fork was mangled on one tip. I replaced it and all is well.

I'm having this happen now. I did the conversion per the manual and it just said tighten and peen the locking tabs over, so I really doubt I got it torqued right. I'm have the back plate off and I'm going to re-torque it. Looks like that one needs a whopping 191ft-lbs!

I've not had to work on the trans, the PO did the FWD conversion and I paid a shop to install the LSD, but 191ft-lbs sounds wrong. check the units, that might need to be in-lbs.

Yeah, came back to say I was wrong in case someone else finds this thread! Sounded high to me so I dug through some threads about this online. Looks to be 88.
I do have some FSM that calls for 191 but I think I was looking at the wrong nut.
Got it back together and went for a drive, 5th seems fine now.

Hour and a half of highway driving plus an autocross in between, stayed in 5th the whole way there and back. If this happens to you, try this first!
