The one on the right shows "all supported files" next to the file name box. I am guessing the one on the right does not.

Well, it looks like your "show file extensions" is turned off, which it does by default, so I can't tell what kind of file it is. It probably is a "system" file.
Try this. Go to Control Panel > Folder Options and then the VIEW TAB
Uncheck the box next to Hide extensions for known file types
Click on the radio button for Show hidden files, folders and drives and see if it shows up
Wayne, if you click on the drop down list at the bottom right that says "All Supported Files" there may be an option to show "All Files". If there is then select that and the file should show up. Not sure the program will be able to do anything with it since it says it's not supported but worth a try.

Rod, I think you have it backwards (or I do). The file does not show in the explorer window but it does show in the File>Open dialog.

I don't know, if I use the "open file" from the writing program and right click and send it to a USB drive. If I copy it back to the documents folder from the USB drive it appears. If I try to attach it to an email, the file that I copied from the USB drive in documents shows but in in original folder where it was created in and doesn't show.

I recently got a new machine, so I've gone from XP to Windows 7. It has been an adjustment period, and while I like some things on Windows 7 over XP, it frustrates me often, and I do miss XP. Seems to me like some of the simplest tasks to accomplish on XP are overly complex on Win. 7.
